    Got some negative attention...

Well, after only two months of ownership I had my first negative experience yesterday.
Parking the car in a very safe part of my hometown for an hour or so (usually it is in garages) I realized when returning that someone had scratched the left rear side of my R8 at a length of about 10 inches.
Actually I am pretty shocked due to the fact the R8 has had up to now only positive attention from everyone.

Is this something that comes along with our cars? Has someone of you had a similar experience (i.e. scratches)? With 15 years of driving Porsche this never ever occured to me and I thought that an Audi R8 will be free of envy (at least more than a Lambo, F-Car etc).

Man, that just hurts to hear. I guess there are some people out there that just have to be morons about things.

Is there any chance that it could have been something like a shopping cart, kid on a bicycle that accidently did it or is it pretty obvious vandalism?

Did you do the park at an angle in two spots, even though way out of the way maneuver? That seems to get people peeved for some odd reason. I guess it's just the fact that you're taking up two spaces? Who knows.

I'm probably jinxing myself, but I've always just parked the car as if it were any other ride and haven't had any issues. I always attempt to find the widest spot between cars (when) possible, but I don't go out of the way to park it out in "safety land". It's worked for me thus far...

btw, mine's the same color - unfortunately a color that shows scratches fairly well. That's a bummer to hear.

My friend has this happen to him after 1st week in London. Unbelievable, some people who envy so much to the extent they have to vandalize it! What goes through their brains... :S They should just stop being jealous with envy and start working harder instead..

I am sorry to hear about your car. I really do dislike people who does these things!

    Thanks,
    Dan

Remember, with the world financial condition in the toilet, conspicuous consumption is risky. It is frowned upon by many and obviously acted upon by a few! Sad.

In 2 yrs of ownership - only had amazingly good responses. Many thumbs up while driving and usually a crowd of people in parking lots when I go back to car. I cant count how many times I've showed the car to people and let them take pics. Always thought the Audi mark more approachable than Ferrari/Lambo etc.

I have very mixed feelings about this. I am one of those people whom it peeves to no end to see someone taking up two spaces in a crowded garage or parking lot, especially in bad weather.

On the other hand, I'm going to be taking my new car down to Naples, FL, where I've seen the Ma and Pa Kettles throwing open the doors of their long-chassis luxobarges and SUV's with nary a care of how or where the doors stop.

I have to say I'm going to be mighty tempted to do some angle-in two-spot parking down there.

However, since so many of them sort of park that way without meaning to, maybe it won't raise the same ire it does in Chicago.

hate to hear stories like this. There are two many a$$hole's out there.

but this doesn't just happen to R8's, it actually happens to a lot of nice cars.

    Re: Got some negative attention...

    Amen.

It happened to my Mercedes SL55 the second day I had it. I had driven it into the enclosed parking garage of a storage facility, and a street beggar followed me into the garage demanding -- not asking -- money. I refused and came back to find a long scratch across the rear deck of the car. (I give plenty of money to charitable work each year, but I do not give anything to the army of panhandlers who work every major intersection in Chicago at rush hour, wandering in and out of traffic. I actually had to quit stopping at the drive-through for my morning coffee because of the number of people invariably approaching the car when the top was down, and sometimes even tapping on the window when the top was up when I was trapped in line.)

Sorry . . . just venting here about an old wound reopened by this thread.

I'd have to say that behavior that obnoxious is NEVER OK. It's completely selfish and inconsiderate. If it's that much of a problem park far away and away from other cars - otherwise you're being just as a**holeish and inconsiderate as they are IMO.
