My state does not require front plate. Monday will ask dealer to change to 6W9. Deal on car was done before I realized it had the 6W3 filler. Since I'm surely going to pay would it be of any value to ask for the 6WE grille and try to sell?

Yes! You paid for it, it's yours to sell, unless the dealer gives you credit for it.
I just completed such a deal with someone on R8TALK that had a license plate delete grill and needed a front plate. You may have to wait a while for the right situation to come up, but it usually does. List it in the for sale forum.

If the dealer charges you for the 6W9, keep the old one for sure and sell it. Somebody will need one or might want to upgrade their 6W3 V8 car for this different grill style.
If the dealer will swap it out for no cost (would be sweet) then it's only fair to let them keep it...

I'm probably going to chop up my PPI cf grill and remove the plate holder completely, allowing installation of a full mesh grill. Gotta do what 'cha 'gotta do.

Dealer contacted Audi and they will furnish the grille. Dealer was going to eat labor but I agreed to give them $200. I think that was only fair considering everything tied to this sale. All parties are happy.
It's well worth the $200.
I've had the front off my car a couple times to install things and it's a pain in the butt if you're not attentive to which fastener came from what hole and if you're not a bit mechanically inclined. (not saying you are, though.)
New car - let the dealer do it.
