MPG Survey - Initial Results

Ok, initial data is in. I've included my supercharged R8 in the V8 data as it's not out of line with other data points (and its looking pretty good!) . There were 8 responses on the V8 side, and I didn't have comprehensive data on R-tronic vs. manual but the Average MPG was 18.13 UK equivalent to 15.09 USA. Conker had the best at 23.06 UK (19.2 USA) and the lead foot of the bunch is Desperado - yay! at 14.41 UK (12.0 USA).

On the V10 side there were only 3 data points and one car with only 480 miles (Monkeyboy's spyder) . Average MPG was 16.3 UK - 13.57 USA. Cavaret was looking like the lead foot here - great stuff !

I've attached a pdf with the data in case anyone wants it. If anyone else wants to add data, please list the following:
1. UK/USA other country
2. Engine (V8/V10)
3. Transmission
4. Miles driven on #2 trip computer (that needs manual re-set)
5. MPG shown on #2 trip computer
6. Average speed (optional) - may give some indication of roads driven

We can report back from our Alpine Trip in a few weeks with 6-7 cars on the same driving path and see how it turns out.

I take great pride in this statistic. I will continue to work to get this number down - it was 11.9 last week so obviously I have slacked off. I promise to buckle down and try harder.

As of my fill up this morning:
1. USA
2. V8
3. MT6
4. 43247 miles
5. 16.832 mpg over the life of the car. This tank was 16.78 mpg.
6. Average speed - if memory serves, it's generally around 28 to 32 mph and I'm usually in the car for about 10.5 hours between fill ups. This, obviously, changes when I'm headed on trips.

I've noticed that the mpg indication from the car versus the actual mileage that I figure out using miles traveled and gallons put in the car at the pump tend to be different, but I can't recall if the car is optimistic or pessimistic to my calculated MPG. My RS6 is the same.

my sense of it is that it's not just how much "hard accelerating" one does but also the amount of highway vs. town driving. That would tend to be reflected in the avg. speed and I certainly notice that on trips. When I take road trips, even ones where I press the car pretty hard, the mileage numbers seem to be MUCH better than in urban/congested suburban driving....maybe because the hard accelerations aren't diluted much by much cruising in between; your avg. speed is in the low 30s, as is mine, and your mileage in the 14s...ditto mine...but I've seen over 20 for sustained periods of pretty fast cruising.

I can't see how average speed is an indicator of anything useful in relation to mpg as the distributions either side of the average could vary wildly and it doesn't factor in the gears/rpm and load which are so key in overall mpg.
