Sports Steering Wheel vs "R8 Ergonomic Steering Wheel"

In Aus, on the Spyder, you have the option of 2 different steering wheels, the standard one is:

Sports steering wheel, multi-function in leather (with paddle shift for R tronic)

    or you can option:

R8 ergonomic multi-function steering wheel with paddle shift

Can someone explain exactly what the difference is? (My dealer is not really sure - and I want a thicker one than the standard one he has on the V10 Coupe he has sitting in the showroom (but like a TT-RS he also has in the showroom), so I'm hoping the 'ergonomic' is code for 'thicker and sexier like the TT-RS'.)

I can then have it in Alcantara or Leather with coloured stitching, but he said Audi have said the Alcantara doesn't last much beyond 2 years on the steering wheel with regular use, so I'm going with the black leather with lunar silver stitching - I hope!

Any advice urgently requested. I forced them to cancel my previous order because I was adamant I wanted illuminated doorsills after the order was 'production planned', so I get to go through the options all over again and I want it perfect this time and want to get the order in so I still have a chance of receiving it this year.

Agreed those descriptions by Audi are confusing. I swapped out my steering wheel shortly after delivery of my R8, the stock wheel was too plain and ordinary. I went with a thicker version by PPI, which I got from OEMPlus who is a contributor to this site. Macarbon also makes one and now also offers a thicker version. I really like the thicker wheel which I had make in Carbon Fiber and black leather same finish as my seats. With the Carbon Interior, blade and engine compartment, it looks like original equipment and not an add on. Both of the vendors mentioned include a number of pictures showing the steering wheels so you can get a good idea of what our wheel will or could look like. Enjoy!

Interesting how Audi is posing that to you. I would think the "ergonomic" unit is the TTRS style steering wheel, actually it's nearly identical to the RS6 unit, however a quick scan of the brochure I don't see the term ergonomic anywhere in regards to the steering wheel. Do you have option codes next to either choice?

I can't find a code for the standard wheel, but the optional 'ergonomic' one is '2PK'

2PK is what you want then. The 2PK steering wheel only came to be in 08/09 and the other units all existed from the beginning of the R8's production. The thicker wheel has only be around a short time for the R8, plus it comes with an R8 badge and the R8 badge lists for the 2PK option. So from what I see that is what you want.

x2, the 2PK wheel is the new RS6/TT-RS style wheel. Not available in coupe, so grab it (literally)!
