    Man Down!

First off, car's fine, just out of commission for a bit.

Went in with a slow leak in a tire, and going to have to now get two new rear tires. Such is life, particularly when I live on a road still with lots of construction. I must have picked up a nail but there wasn't anything left in the tire when I looked at it to indicate I had picked something up. The leak was slow enough that it only lost one or two psi a week. If it was parked right on the puncture in a particular way, it could lose ten psi quickly - but only once did it trip the tire pressure monitoring system. Too bad the system can't give realtime display of the tire pressures...

So... while I'm waiting for the new tires to be shipped to Ottawa from Toronto, they go over the car with a fine toothed comb, and find a leaking rear damper. The car has less than 8000km on it. Anybody else with early reliability issues? So they have a call in to Audi about it, and really don't want me driving the car - seems like the R8 tech at the dealership is, how does one say, detail oriented about his fleet of R8s that he manages.

So, now I wait some more - so for now I'm booting around in a stellar (not) Mistu Lancer as a loaner. Booya! Darn those CVTs are strange.

My '08 was in the shop four times in my first five weeks of ownership, starting with a faulty damper that caused the "Suspension Malfunction" warning to come on less than two hours after picking the car up from the dealer. Also had an engine sensor failure, a brake sensor failure, and a jammed gas filler lid in the first few weeks.

After that rough start, the car was faultless until about 12,000 miles when the steering rack had to be replaced due to a leak.

I assumed some of this was caused by my car being a fairly early production model (ordered in September '07) with some kinks still to be worked out.

I have experienced the jammed fuel filler door as well as another friend. The door would unlock, but not pop - had to use a credit card to pop it open. My friend had to use the manual release wire, and got it opened successfully. I find it has to do with the tether for the cap getting in the way somehow. I have since clipped the fuel cap retaining tether - not a problem since.

I wonder how long they are going to want to hold on to my car. Now, oddly, my paranoid mind is working away too. They had the car for the rear tires during the 5.0 earthquake. I'm hoping that it didn't fall off the hoist and they're making wonky cover stories.

That is why they have a service bulletin on the gas tether. There were several threads about it over a year ago. Most of the cars should have the updated one by now and it should not be too much of an issue.

Well, my car was made early this year in 2010 - so I would be surprised that it wouldn't have an updated part - so it still is an issue then even if the part is different.
