    R8 V8 TT vs R8 V10

    Gentleman,
I'm a former 2008 V8 R8 owner - I loved the car though wound up selling it 2 years ago in anticipation of the V10 model, looking for something with a bit more HP.

The V10 seems to sell lightly used for around $145-160k give or take. It's certainly peaked my interest, though remains a bit pricier than I'd like. Now, I'm reading about a new entry to the high performance R8 world - the Twin Turbo R8 from a few shops. It looks to be becoming increasingly popular, as it is putting down close to 530 rWHP, a 180hp gain over stock. It actually outperforms (HP wise) the V10 model, and probably winds up being a bit less expensive too, as it seems one can buy a used V8 for around $105-115, plus maybe $30k (? don't know) for the TT.

I'd definitely like to get back into an R8. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the TTs in terms of reliability and/or increased wear on the stock clutch and drive train, as it will clearly void the factory warranty.

It's hard to know which way to lean, as on one hand the V8 TT is a bit higher performance and less expensive, though one is sacrificing the Audi drivetrain warranty, compared to the V10 which by all reports is amazing too.

    Any thoughts gents?

My point of view, (I'm working on buying a R8 not an owner yet) is that I normally customize cars I buy but looking at what I would spend on a V10 against buying and upgrading a V8 both warranty and resell value I must say I would go with a V10. If I had the V8 already I would put the VF engineering supercharger on it, it is the only system out there that could go for being factory installed. I know I would wind up spending more on buying and modifying a V8 over what I would spend on the V10,

I would expect a well sorted V8 turbo setup to make more torque than a V10, but it probably also wants more owner involvement over time. Don't forget too that a V8 optioned up to the V10 level is not that far shy in price.

Now if some crazy vendor would commit to dropping a supercharger between the banks of that V10. Woof! dang CA emissions laws.

    Re: R8 V8 TT vs R8 V10

The twin turbo 09 that I'm in process of having done has ended up costing me right at what a new V10 would run.

I'll have roughly 120 more hp than the V10 and still get V8 fuel economy as long as I stay out of the fun pedal.

If I had not already paid for the options (TT setup & some other stuff) I'd planned on putting on the V8 that I had, there was a blue V10 in Chicago that might have been snatched up.

That said, I believe that I'll be happier with the TT setup in the V8 platform.

Kfab- 120 more hp than the V10??? i though the TT made around 530-550 hp. sounds like you'll be pulling 650 hp??? what kind of boost is that and how are you going to suitably cool the engine? i am very intrigued!!!!

    Re: R8 V8 TT vs R8 V10

I read somewhere that the crank is supposed to be right around 620.

If you'll go to Heffner's web site, there's a dyno chart that shows rear wheel hp:

It says 6 psi on 93 octane right on the sheet.

Just screwing around with the math, if our engines are rated at 420 hp at the crank and the car puts down 353, (420/353=1.19 or 84%)

Put that back at the 536 that the TT setup puts on the ground and you end up with 637 at the crank. - assuming it's a 16% drive train loss.

If the drive train loss is just the difference, not a precentage, between the 420 & 353 then add the 67 loss to the 536 and you get right at 600.

Okay, so maybe only about 100 more. The V10 makes 510 at the crank, right? That's what I was basing that on.

My car was dynoed before OEM started it's transformation. It will be interesting to see what the results end up being. I've not seen the stock dyno chart yet.

I will be the first to admit that I've done very little dyno stuff, so I don't know if it's a percentage or a flat given amount that you loose through the drive train. It would seem to me that it would just be a flat amount, but there's also an acceleration aspect, so is it percent? I don't know!

    Someone enlighten me please.

    ----------------------------------

I just realized that's a fourth gear run. The rev limiter hits right around 95 in third.

I'm pretty sure the difference is crank HP vs wheel HP. The V10 is 525 @ the crank. The dealers always post crank numbers, because they are higher than wheel numbers. The TT numbers come from a wheel dyno... So, when the wheel numbers are adjusted to crank numbers, for comparison, they are will show the TT higher. There is a loss of power at the wheels, from friction and the mass that needs to be moved. You can search this forum or several other internet sites that explain this loss better.

Kfab, you ninja'd your post as I was typing this time, like I did a couple of weeks to one of your posts...

    Re: R8 V8 TT vs R8 V10

Here is my 2 cents... As an owner of a Heffner Twin Turbo V8 I would take the v8 TT all day long over a v10. My car was one of the first Heffner TT and I have put a good hard 5k miles on it. I have had my car since January of 2008. I went from stock to Stassis exhaust and revotek tune to Heffner TT.

In terms of performance the car is amazing. There is not much that can touch it. I am running 8 psi and opted for the additional upgrade through heffner... more psi and larger fuel pumps... The car is night and day!

If anyone is in the Tampa bay area and wants to check it out, let me know... I also have a couple of good vids...

I hope Kfab got the larger fuel pumps too. I would want them, for the additional HP.

JaxR8, take a look at this thread

Autocar UK on Supercharged V8 R8

Maverick ( Michael ) had his V8 supercharged, i had the good fortune to drive it a little when i swopped my Spyder with him on a road trip a few weeks ago, not sure of the comparison to the TT but IMHO the supercharged V8 has more torque than the V10, i think they are pretty similar on speed, acceleration ect but the V8sc definitely had more torque particularly at lower revs, also it sounds amazing, read the report, i am sure Maverick will give you more of a firsthand ownership experience, such as enhanced fuel economy, yes! enhanced!!
