    Low Oil Level Indication

I have 3200 miles on my car and a good deal of that is track time. My low oil indicator light came on this evening while taking a nice easy drive. My first scheduled service is at the end of this month. Fortunately, there is no indication on the garage floor suggesting a leak. Seems strange that the oil could be low with so few miles. I can't believe that a new engine should be burning any oil. Perhaps it's because of all the track time. Has anyone had a similar experience?

New engines often consume oil. It is normal. There have been several threads about this on this forum.

Thumbs up Re: Low Oil Level Indication

Your usage of one liter in 3200 miles sounds perfectly normal.

If you did not check your oil level and just waited for the low oil indicator to come on, you are considerably more than one quart low.

The V10 manual says that oil consumption will be higher during the break-in period, and as much as one quart in the first 600 miles is normal. My V8, which I broke in carefully, consumed about one quart every 2000 miles throughout the two years I owned it.

My V10, which I picked up last week and drove almost 1500 miles back home, now has about 1680 miles on it. The dipstick is not yet quite down to the fill indicator line.

Check your oil regularly. DO NOT WAIT for the low oil indicator light to come on. That light is a call for emergency action, not a substitute for regular maintenance checks.

    Re: Low Oil Level Indication

A lot of new cars do not even come with a dip stick to check the oil. The R8 has one and it should be checked regularly, as others have said.

On this Forum, over the last few years, there has been no consistency in oil use by the R8. Some engines burn through it quickly, others never need to add oil between oil services. If you have a heavy user, it should settle down after break-in but don't be surprised if it doesn't. Audi will tell you this is normal too.
