    R8 V10 Spyder Shut Lines

    Hello All,

Would like to get some feed back on some Spyder or even the wider R8 owners concering thier cars shutlines.

I took my car on a nice drive this weekend in the Uk country side, great views and the car was amazing, but the weather was TERRIBLE!

Anyway, basically alot of side roads and alot of debris etc...

See attached a picture i took on the rear passanger quater shut line above the wheels.

I had a good look at the whole car and its shut lines and am i right in thinking that they are not the tightest of shut lines. i mean they were big enough for small stones to actualy be caught inbetween the boddy panels.

Really like some feed back as im close to contacting Audi on this point.

    Kind Regards,

I have had to pull a few pebbles out from around the blade area, but that does not look right to me. The body panels should be tight.

Are they uneven, or consistently that far apart?

Were they like that from new?

    Doesn't look right to me.

yea, that doesn't look right at all. Audi has been known to have one of the tightest shut lines in the market.

The shut lines on my R8 are impeccable like most. Yours are almost as bad as KFABs' tree limb adjusted lines.

Re: R8 V10 Spyder Shut Lines

    Thanks for the replies.

Yesterday i went and visted a Audi Dealership and had a good look at a R8 Coupe 2nd hand and not sure on model year.

But the passanger side rear quater pannel shut lines, where in my view tighter/closer toghether.

R8vten - The lines have been like that from new.

While at the dealership the service guy told me to bring it in for a look. the last thing i wanted/ want is for a standard audi mechanice have a good poke at my car.

But what could be the result, that they are further than usual? what would audi do?

being practically a hand built car could this just be one of the side effects of that?

The gaps for the body panels are intentionally somewhat wide as a design element. This according to chief of design at the Audi Design Center in California. The spacing is specified in the body service manual. I don't have mine with me and the specs for various locations on the car vary slightly, but my recollection is that, with allowable tolerances, it is in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 mm.

The shut lines on my car are also wide with about 3/4mm, I went along a gritted road the other day and then noticed small chippings wedged in the gaps, had to pull down and out on the panel to release the stones without causing them to scratch, I am not too concerned about this, having seen how they assemble them in Neckarsulm and the laser measure test for each panel I would not worry, it is supposed to be that way.

Having my carbon mirrors fitted by dealership next Tuesday (did not have the bottle to tackle myself) so I will ask about gaps while i am there, am also going to ask about the sqeeking I can hear with top down when I go over bumps, I read somewhere others have had this on the coupe and to check the rear light, well light is on the back panel of the spyder so don’t think it’s this, I think it’s the hood moving in the storage compartment, or a suspension noise.

Other than these minor points I am enjoying the car, just need better weather for more open top motoring!

Mine are a little wider than on other cars I've had, but they are very consistent. I think it's fine.
