    Upcoming 2014 R8 ...

I have been pondering about the upcoming version of the Audi R8.

"Audi R8 Black has already showcased A5 development models with such body panels and they achieve significantly better performance while also returning better fuel economy. The transmission will include a dual clutch gearbox option termed “DSG”. The engine is very likely to be a high output version of Audi’s upcoming 4.0 Liter V8 FSI engine generating between 550 and 600 PS (441 kW; 592 bhp). The Quattro system that will be employed is expected to be a variation of the RS5′s, but with two differential’s allowing torque to be distributed between each wheel of both the front AND rear axles. The base version of the next R8 is expected to be quicker than the last version of the current R8, the R8 GT. With a projected curb weight of 3,300 lb (1,500 kg) this vehicle is expected to produce astounding performance with a projected 0-60 time of less than 3.5 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph (320 km/h)."

This is something that I saw that I found to be quite intriguing. If the next version of this already fantastic car is going back to a 4.0 V8 with a performance of 550-600 THEN perhaps the next version after that would be a 5.0 V10 model. If that were the case then we're looking at 687-750 ponies. At least that's what happens when you add a couple of more cylinders like they did with the 4.2 V8 to the 5.2 V10. This would simply be ASTONISHING.

Does anyone have any information with the next generation V8 version?

    Thank you.

this same engine...likely detuned will be in the upcoming s7...as it is in the bentley GT v8 version that should show at paris
"A while back a source of ours at the senior-most levels of Audi told us a bit about this new 4.0T. This new evolution of the corporate V8 will make use of a biturbo configuration with all the goods housed between the V in order to save room on packaging. That conversation spoke of the 4.0T in the context of the A8 but further discussions with other sources have confirmed the engine for the S6 as well.

Here’s where we begin to make our own assumptions. Audi has always shared powerplants between S6 and S8 ever since the first S8 was introduced. That strategy is unlikely to change and, with the A7 shoehorned in between, it is logical that the A7 would also get this new engine. Given Bentley may show the 4.0T version of the Continental GT at Paris, a rollout of the first 4.0T there as well is a reasonable conclusion. "

it is becoming clear that the upcoming 4.0T V8 from audi is going to come in three variations:

    1. single turbo with 408 hp (think S6/S7/A8)
    2. twin turbo with 518 hp (think base bentley continental and S8)
    3. high output twin turbo with 600+ hp (think RS6, RS7)

the question is: what will audi put in the new gallardo and R8? the third variant or soldier on with an updated version of the current engine (think 600hp) while making the new vehicles 300 lbs lighter?

ps- we are scheduled to see the first variant in geneva next month.

Wondering mostly about what it will look like. Think they will keep the side blades?

I certainly hope so. Just as it would be hard to envisage a 911 Turbo without the trademark whaletail.

But then, they did do away with the side blades for the Spyder.

i expect they'll keep the "sideblade" concept but they won't be on the same part of the car as before... they'll probably be a bit different.

i hear the front end/headlights will be wicked.

So I imagine this next r8 will cost a lot more too? Especially if it's quicker than the GT.

I doubt it, at least not much more expensive: The R8 is positioned strategically in the marketplace to fill a certain price niche and VW isn't likely to upscale the R8 to make it compete with the Gallardo, not when there are the V12 Vantage, Porsche Turbo, and Maserati Gran Turismo in their price niche to compete with.

I hope this means softening of used R8 prices by 2013
