Audison / Hertz Custom Audio Install

The sound quality from the B&O system was bothering me so I left the car with Gary @ AudioFile In-Car in Bishops Stortford for a week, while I was on a business trip to London. Summary of work and components below :-

  • Front speakers - Audison Voce tweeters, 3" mids and 6" bass drivers in the factory locations
  • Subs - 2 x 8" Hertz EFS20
  • Audison Prima 8.9 bit (combination of amp and processor)
  • Hertz HDP1 mono amp hidden - same location as old B&O amp (for subs)
  • Custom sub enclosure
  • Audison DRC control
  • loads of dynamat

The factory B&O amp has been removed, the original front mid speaker, sub and rears have been disabled.

One of my objectives for the system was keep the car looking as factory as possible with speakers either in factory locations or hidden. I was keen on having a sub(s) but some of the R8 installs with subwoofer protruding from the rear shelf into the space between the seats were not aesthetically pleasing to me. Whilst any R8 owner will know my sub enclosure is not factory, it would not be as obvious to any casual observer, as it integrates perfectly into the shelf and finished in leatherette. I could have hidden the Audison 8.9 as well, but it is such a nice piece of kit it had to go on display! Well done to Gary for ticking all the boxes.

The system is run from from a full wave line out from the factory head unit, so no need to use the old speaker level outputs from the B&O amp. The new Prima 8.9 has 8 channels and is set up to run "actively" i.e. the frequencies / x-over points sent to the front speakers are set by the 8.9 so no need for passive x-overs. The 6" bass drivers in the doors are run from a bridged pair, so all channels used. The 9th channel is a line level out going to the Hertz mono-amp for the two 8" subs. Gary set it up with two time alignment settings - one driver biased and the other driver and passenger. I was surprised how much difference this makes with a good CD audio source and would easily recommend this to anyone upgrading their system; you will need something like the 8.9, a Audison bit 1, a bit 10, or I think Alpine have a unit though with less functionality.

The DRC is fixed in the glove compartment - its a silver finish so it would stick out like a sore thumb if installed elsewhere in the cabin. Can be used to control the sub level, switch between time alignment settings.

Some photos below (hopefully)

There are better quality photos in my Album

That is a clever and graceful install! I used to do work like that back in the day and admire your work!!

The BO stereo is OK, but lots of compression stilt the sound. You also can tell that the bass is produced by some 4-th order bandpass enclosure. It has that "one note" sound. I would have rather had the 8 inch midbass drivers do the bass duty than what they have it set up for. It is almost like they referenced the "Bose" sound. (although BO at the very least seems to added more "musicality" than bose typically offers)

How's it sound?
Great!! I deliberately didn't mention anything about the sound in my original post as I find audio quality hard to describe in words - I'd never get a job at What Hifi?

I found the original B&O system had pretty good power, but the sound was very muddy and unfocussed which is not surprising with the centre speaker on the dash and the two speakers behind the seats in addition to the door speakers. The B&O tweeters were also very directional projecting sound across the dash but sound quality deteriorated significantly at the driver listening position, especially when you are 6'4 with the seat all the way back. The Audison tweeters throw out a lot more sound into the cabin. I had considered keeping the original rear speakers or replacing them with better quality, but the installer recommended against it. His view was that if you have the front set up properly, especially with the time alignment, there is no need for rear fill. And it proved to be right - I guess "surround sound" is something many have become accustomed to with home cinema but is not necessary, in fact its a detraction, from high quality stereo audio. The dedicated amp and subs give bass extension that just wasn't there before.

I know this is way behind on this post, but I recently bought a 2010 R8 V10 and my complaint is less about the quality of sound as it is the quality of the head unit. The factory unit (and backup camera) are just horrific. My fear is that replacing the head unit will cause issues with all other controls. Has anyone else done that?

I changed to a Pioneer 8750BT and couldn’t be happier - better sound, reversing cam, Apple Car Play touchscreen. The OEM buttons beneath the radio (including volume, scroll wheels) no longer work. I kept them in for OEM look though rather than using a flat surround. Steering wheel controls all work.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but where does one pick up the audio output of the stock R8 "head unit"? Can this easily be found under the dash? I'd like to add a low profile sub behind the seats. And where's the best place to mount the amp? I still want to be able to control the volume or output of the amp. Here's what I was thinking about:

JL Audio 12TW3-D8 Subwoofer
JL Audio XD600/1v2 Amp

I could build my own box and run my own cables, but just need to know where to tap into.
