Haven't done it with R8 but several times with Bosxter S and bmw M roadster. Lots of fun and some great curves. Group of us used to drive thru every year going the the BMW homecoming. That was several years ago and now I hear the cops are so bad about writing tickets you have to be very careful what you do. Still would be a fun drive and lots of good scenery.Week day would be better than weekend.

I don't mind the police as I tend to drive very politely in the R8. Just looking for a nice one-day trip. The end of the Tail is about 5 hours from me.
Any suggestions on a nice place to stay for one night? Any cool B&Bs nearby? I'd rather pay more for luxury.

Watch for the motorcycles. I believe 2 motorcyclists die every year riding over their heads on that road. Looks like a great ride though.
Yep, did it last fall. It's got a bunch of independent photographers who just sit there and take pictures of everyone going by, hoping you will go to their web site and buy them. I did go snitch a few photos, but didn't buy, and then posted one here.

Been on it a ton of times. There is a small place called Fontana Village where you can rent a room. It's not a great room, but not terrible either and it's about 3 miles from the tail. Tons of fun driving the dragon and the skyway. I highly recommend both drives. But as one poster said you definately need to watch the bikes. They will sometimes dump it in front of you or lean onto your side of the road. Some people try to treat it like a racetrack which is why the cops are cracking down so bad.
But it is a road you will never forget. It is the curviest road in the US 318 turns in an 11 mile radius if memory serves me right. Lot's challenging curves too with decreaing radius turns etc.
I miss that road alot lol.
