Race mode activation instructions on GT

As you might know the Audi R8 GT comes with a race mode, at least optional in Germany. Read on how to activate it!

There’s no switch involved when choosing Race Mode, at least not in the conventional sense—they’ve made activation a little more difficult to ensure that the driver has fully contemplated the ramifications of such a decision. (Germany has lawyers, too.)

    Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Open the front luggage compartment and locate a removable panel that hides some of the car’s electrical bits.

Step 2: Remove the panel; if you’re greeted by a pair of positive battery leads, you’re in the right place. If you don’t see them, you might be fiddling with someone else’s car.

Step 3: The lower post is for street use. Switch the battery cable to the upper one, and you’re in Race Mode. It’s that simple.

Once that’s done, the Race Mode indicator lamp on the center console is illuminated and the kill switches become active; one is located on the exterior at the base of the windshield, and the other sits in what looks like a modified Audi ashtray, located in the forward center cup holder.

What does it do other than turn everything off?

The truth is i am not entirely sure! reading the spec sheets it says in sport mode it allows a degree of controllable over steer when accelerating out of a corner, & if required on track days and circuit based driving the system can be deactivated entirely, the racing lateral inspired double wishbone suspension delivers lateral acceleration and faster reactions, the GT intensifies these responses through hydraulic, power assisted R&P steering that has a 16.3:1 ratio, the manually adjustable coil over suspension lowers the car by 10 mm's coupled with higher front and rear wheel camber rates for agility.

    Whatever all that means!

One thing i am not very happy about, in all the literature sent out months ago Audi stated that ceramic brakes would be standard, now i have the order sheet they want another £7,300 for ceramic brakes, my dealership has taken this up with Audi and they are looking into it but blame a printing error, the thing is that all the press releases through all the car mags such as Evo, Auto Express and so on all reported the GT would have ceramic brakes as standard, now they seem to be swiveling, well, if they don’t include them i will not be proceeding and i know others who will be of the same opinion

    Hi Colin,

in the German Pricing and Specification Guide for the GT valid from July 2010 they wrote that the ceramic brakes are standard, no charge. They aren't listed in the pricing list.
Maybe there is a difference between Germany und UK. But I can't believe it especially when initially they say in the UK the ceramic brakes are also without charge

That color is outstanding Colin - I would surely jump on that. The ceramic brake thing could certainly be a deal breaker so I hope they can get that resolved.

Re: Race mode activation instructions on GT

In the US in some auto mags they are stating that the GT base price is 195k rather than under 225K. I wonder if this has something to do with making the ceramic brakes an option rather than being included...
