    Alignment Specs

I have never had a wheel alignment done on my R8 since new but with a set of new Michelin Sport Pilot Cups thought the time is right.

I received the following specs today from my Audi dealer but I am a bit confused as all other alignment specs I have seen and use on the GT-R are in degrees.

    Can anyone translate?

Been advised that the Cups enjoy negative camber as the tread is made of 2 different compounds with the harder sticky component on the outside part of the tyre for consistent fast laps etc.

Any other specs out there or what are the set ups for you other trackers out there?

I think these are in the same units as you're used to. Each minute (') is 1/60th of a degree.

It will be interesting to hear what others are running for alignment. At the price of tires, it's nice to find the best balance in spec between performance and wear :-)

    Re: Alignment Specs

I posted my track alignment specs a while ago. Good discussion in this thread: Wheel Alignment for Track Use

After running this for a while, I'm pretty happy with it. Basically I maxed out the front camber, and set the rear camber to -1.0 degrees. I would like to be able to add more negative camber in the front to reduce outside front shoulder tire wear, but the stock adjustment mechanism won't allow it. Further camber requires a camber kit which is expensive because it's more than just the little washers, plus it would wear out the insides of your street tires more quickly.

I also reduce the front tire pressure by 3 lbs to reduce understeer when on the track.

Here's the picture of the alignment I ended up with:

    Re: Alignment Specs

I am still running stock alignment settings. Currently have camber at -1.0deg front and -0.9 deg rear. I do wear the outsides of the tires more than the centers. I usually flip the tires on the wheel mid-life to maximize the wear (symmetric tires like the Hoosier R6 and Toyo R888). You can't do that with an asymmetric tire like the PZero, PZero Trofeo, Pilot Sport Cup and Pilot Sport PS2.
With the additional speed I am carrying on the track since adding the STaSIS supercharger, the car is much harder on tires. I will also be maxing out the front negative camber. BTW, increasing the front caster will add additional negative camber during turning, so that should be part of any race alignment.

    Re: Alignment Specs

I would shoot to push the front negative camber to the maximum for your tracking junkies and also look at getting the toe close to zero up front. Unfortunately caster is non-adjustable to my knowledge on the front end, but Desperado you are correct some more caster would be beneficial.

The rear I wouldn't have all too much negative camber, -1.0 sounds like a reasonable place to start. Having toe within spec in the dead middle of Audi's recommended range should help to keep the car stable in a straight line, the closer to zero the less stable, however the car may set better in the corner or it could also get rather tail happy.

Having a fair amount of front negative camber with too much toe will chew through the inner edge of the front tires if you daily drive the car as well. Nice and stable in a straight line with the added toe however. Most alignment settings have a purpose, but also have their drawbacks in other situations.

Desperado- Flopping tires helps get so much more life out of them. I rotate every filter change (3k miles) and when I start to see inner edge tire wear I have the tire shop flop inside edge to outside edge and wheels change the sides of the car since I usually have directional tires on.

    Cheers,
    Alexander van Gerbig
