Who's driving their R8 this winter?

Well, we're well into the fall and the temperatures are starting to drop. Although it's still not yet "cold" per se, this is when we start thinking about winter preparation for our cars. I've ordered Pirelli Sottozero 240 Serie II winter tires (235/35R-19 and 295/30R-19) and they should be here on Saturday.

We didn't get much snow last winter (2010 Winter Olympic Games participants will attest to that), so I have not yet had a chance to drive the R8 in truly wintery conditions, but there'll likely be more snowfall this year. I'm just wondering what to expect, and if there are potential pitfalls I should know about when I'm out there trying to have some winter driving fun with the R8.

    Opinions and advice much appreciated.

I have petitioned the weather channel to declare us part of the Tropics (Manitoba) so that I can drive the car all through the months formerly known as Winter. It is working so far, since it is in the mid 20's C here this week.

    LOL

BUT!!.... it WILL eventually get cold again. And if it's just cold, and there isn't exactly a foot of snow on the ground, I think it's not enough to stop me from wanting to drive the R8, so those winter tires ARE going to get used as far as I'm concerned. You obviously want to drive the car as long as you can, so are you considering putting winter tires on too?

No, we have a different class of winter than you guys. I think brutal cold and ice would take the fun out of driving the car. Our winters are REALLY hard on cars, so I normally put it away in late November and bring it back out in late March or early April.

Have always driven my sports cars through the winter. Can't see any reason not to drive the R8.

That's what I like to hear! Have you figured out what winter tires will be going on your car then? I could only find correctly sized winter tires from Pirelli and Dunlop.

I was going to ship my car to Vancouver for 2 weeks at Christmas (since i'm going to be there) and drive it for those 2 weeks. But at $2000+ freight back and forth, I've decided that it might not be a good idea (financially).

if I lived in Vancity, i would be driving it all year round.

Yes in the rain. Not in the snow. And, not when there's salt on the roads. I'm leaving the summer tires on as I'm hoping to wear out the crappy Pirellis and move on to PS2s :-)

I'm in the midwest and will drive it through the winter but leave it home on days with snow. This will be my first winter with the car and I'm sure it will be fine and if I happen to get caught on a day when it snows unexpectantly, at least the quattro should get me home without too much drama.
