Newbie here- need some advise from owners

Am dying here. Was going to buy a 911 turbo and during research found the r8. That lead me to research and now I am thinking manual v10. I test drove one today and can't stop thinking about it. Had 4k mikes and they said the drop dead was 145k. All black carbon fiber through out. They said it was a show car and traveled a lot.

Car felt tight and seemed not to have anything wrong. I guess if you were in my shoes would you...

    1. bite the bullet and buy new
    2. Since your not in a hurry wait till the v10's start to show up more often
    3. Buy a like used one with soft miles

I am not in a rush. I live in Detroit area and it is about to get cold anyways. I was thinking that next summer the market might not be so tight to. Doesn't seem like a lot of v10's out there.

Figured if I was going to drop 145k it would be new. Thoughts???

Guess it depends on how much you trust the previous 4k miles of usage. Was the car broken in right? Was it a show "demo" car for people to try around the country, or was it a show car as in it went to various auto shows on display?

Was the person who transported it the same person at each show, or did it change hands multiple times .. my guess is it wasn't the same person, and if the driver knew it was just a traveling show car, they may have had the rental car mentality... it's not mine, drive it hard.

I guess the real question is ... is $15k give or take worth the peace of mind that every mile, the break in, and the treatment of the vehicle is yours... if so, order one since it's starting your winter and it'll be here right around the time the weather starts getting nice

Or, the alternative is just wait until you find a single owner who you feel comfortable with who's selling one in 6-9 months. A few folks have already decided to drop their coupes for the Spyders, so there may be a great deal in your future for a car that has been well taken care of.

For another $10K, you can buy new. 4K miles is not too bad, but it depends on what type of miles they were. I've got 6K miles on mine since Feb.

The extra $$ might be worth the piece of mind.

Buy a brand new one if you don't mind losing 10-15k as soon as you pull off the lot. If you could post a link or share pics with this particular car, someone here might actually know of this car, and further be able to advise you....
B.t.w., next summer, (if that car is still around) that car may bring more money than now going in to the winter months.

If you were lucky, they broke it in HARD. Non of that *****footing around. Those of us that have flogged our cars from the start seem to get every so slightly better fuel economy and have cars that use less oil between services.

Couldn't agree more after having the practical experience of having tried both approaches with 2 R8 engines.

My second one driven hard from the word go never required a top up of oil between services which was totally opposite to the first one.

New V10 will be hard from the start!!

Does breaking it in hard decrease lifespan of the engine, even though there's better performance?

I'm talking if you're planning to have the car for 100,000+ miles

cars now are already broken in at the factory...I am pretty sure the test drives they make with the car at the factory are pretty harsh to make sure the car performs like it should...

Just bear in mind that breaking it in hard is the complete opposite of what Audi recommends. It's highlighted several places in the manual as well.

There will always be multiple schools of thought on break in... just keep in mind that from a warranty perspective it could bite you later. BMW is notorious for this on their M cars, if you don't break it in properly, they know. Their computers track launch control, RPMs, servicing, driving patterns .. etc. There have been multiple instances of owners getting warranty claim rejections due to abuse of the break in and vehicle in general.

Audi may have a different policy or perspective... but just keep it in mind.

If you watch the Megafactory story of the R8 you can see how they break-in the engine. I doubt you would be worried about how you break-in the car after seeing this program. There are many links to download this program on this site.
