Spyder or Coupe, what would you guys pick?

We were at Stevens Creek Audi and they have two cars I really like. Both are the rare 6-speed manual gear box and v10 new model.

One is a slightly used 3000 mile slate grey (Audi Exclusive) color R8 coupe with CF mirrors and interior accents. Dealer is asking $163k

The other one is a new black Spyder and they want MSRP $174k + 25k market adjustment.

I know the manager there pretty well and he said he could "work" on the market adjustment if I wanted the car. Originally I had my heart set on a white coupe and the slate grey is so sexy but my friend noted the coupes look bubbly out back and at certain angles looks like the Audi TT which the manager agreed. There is no mistaking the Spyder is an exotic except you can't see the engine.

Why did you guys pick the coupe or spyder? Keep in mind here in norcal it's sunny 90% of the time. We are in mind november and it was 80 yesterday!

If I had the $ and was in Cali...Spyder. If I was me and in Wisconsin...Coupe. You have to have them drop the market adjustment, or wait 6 months untill that goes away.

The Nissan dealers tried to pull that when the GT-R was new. The "Market Adjustement" came back to bite most of them. They had unsold cars on the lot while "good" dealers were selling cars like crazy. It is not hard to ship a brand-new car across the country, and worth it to save $20K. MSRP on my GT-R was $73K. The tag on the rear-view said "$89K". Needless to say, I picked it up for less than MSRP.

Don't pay over sticker for your car. Market adjustments are crap, I just picked up my 2011 Spyder a couple weeks ago and it wasn't a penny over sticker. (Actually I managed to get $1,100 off sticker in the end due to a snafu on the dealers part).

Plenty of dealers will sell them at sticker, and there are 19 Black Spyders in the US right now on dealer showrooms. If you don't mind the car being shipped, several of them were willing to sell their cars at sticker price. (I called all over to get a feel for market before I bought mine).

To answer your question... me personally, I prefer the coupe. The wife however wanted the Spyder... and since we were only buying 1.. we ended up with the Spyder.

    25k market adjustment? That's insane.

Shop at a national level, not local. There's plenty of dealers willing to sell the same car for drastically less. The car was shipped all the way from Germany in the first place, what's the problem with shipping it one last time to it's new home?

No doubt about it - Coupe.

I'm not much of a Spyder fan - for that matter, I've never been a convertible guy.

But, that said, it should be the car that makes you happy, not us.

Ship? Heck, go get it and enjoy the drive home!
I picked up my first one in Houston and the second is from So-Cal. Great drives both times.

I like convertibles but when I had my RS4 Cab people called it a chicks car. Doubt the R8 Spyder will ever be called that though. I like the lines of the Coupe much better than the Spyder and one of my favorite features is the engine under glass.

Coupe for me no doubt. One aspect is the road trip. The coupe loses the storage behind the seats, which means all you have is a tiny trunk. Not enough to head out for a week or two. Even without that issue, I still would go coupe.

The Spyder for sure. Think about all those summer time with the top down. It's totally worth the hassle of lossing luggage space for long travel (which is once or twice a year). And don't pay a cent over MSRP. You should try to get it below MSRP. Paying for the that market adjustment craps is just another way to encourage them keep on doing it. oh, then call back to your local dealer just to give them a nice slap in the face. Audi at the end is Audi. You don't pay market adjustment for Lambo nor Ferrari nor Bentley, so why for an Audi?

Hi s4play, I haven't seen you around here for awhile. Welcome back.
You don't mention whether you track your cars, but if you do something to consider is that most track organizations in Norcal look dimly on convertibles. I don't know whether the R8 Spyder would pass the "broomstick test" which is commonly applied.
