I am both a new member and a new owner of a 2011 R8 Spyder (daytona grey / black).
I am trying to figure out if I should buy an extended warranty. I dont know how long I will keep the car but I plan to drive it about 10,000 miles per year.

Congrats on the spyder, you must be in heaven!
I hope we'll see you at one of the NorCal or SoCal Audi Club events, as more and more R8's are participating and we do have a good time. There are some other owners in the Santa Barbara area. (you might PM "quimna" and see if he wants to meet up for coffee. let him know I sent you.)

Your expected annual usage is similar to what I've put on my 2009 V8 coupe over the last 2-1/2 years. I don't have an extended warranty.
I have gotten my money's worth from the Audi Care (pre-paid scheduled maintenance) and the Audi new car warranty (4-yr/50,000 mi) has taken care of any little things which have come up. In general Audi has been very, very proactive in making sure their R8 authorized dealers don't skimp on warranty claims. (One or two on this forum have had some issues, but so far these seem to be isolated cases with extenuating circumstances, such as modified cars and just bad timing/luck.) So far the only thing I've paid for (besides upgrades) is gas, brakes and tires.
If it helps with your decision, so far my car has been extremely reliable and I expect will continue to be so. However, I doubt any R8s have been around long enough to have put in a claim on an extended warranty, so it's pretty hard to know how much I might miss having one in the next few years! If anything major goes "bang" after the warranty period, I'm sure it will be an expensive repair...

Congratulations on the new R8. I am a bit confused. Can't you just add the extended warranty if you plan on keeping your car past the 4 year / 50,000 mile warranty period?

My suggestion is that if you plan on keeping your car for a long time, definitely buy the extended warranty. Audi charges the same amount for the extended warranty no matter which model car you buy, so for like $4500 you get 5 years (if I remember right) extended warranty on everything except normal wear items. A single repair can cost that much, so it's a no-brainer -- if you plan on keeping the car beyond the time period of the standard warranty.

The replys are all very helpful. This V10 is so much fun to drive and I can't seem to keep my foot off the floor so I guess I better plan for a few breakdowns along the way. I need to find out if the warranty can be transferred to the next owner if I ever sell it. I haven't researched buying the warranty later but that is something I will follow up on as it shouldn't be hard to find out what they go for today on a two or three year old car. If anyone has done this please let us know what the price was.
Extended warranty is only one extra year of coverage?
Congratulations and welcome aboard from a Solvang based owner.
On balance, extended warranties benefit the seller more than the car owner. I would wait and see if the car eats repairs during the factory warranty period, then consider buying an extended warranty near the end when you have an idea of how reliable the car has been.
my dealer said i can be added anytime but after 35k miles it goes up in price alot
I'm still not sure...Desparado, did YOU purchase the extended warranty? ()

Yes, that's the way it works. I spent a lot of time researching this. No rush.
The car has to be covered under the original manufacturer's warranty in order to purchase the extended warranty. You can do this right before it expires (time or mileage).
If your original warranty has expired, you need to get your car certified before they will sell you an extended warranty. It's basically a CPO inspection and they're not cheap for an R8. So keep your eye on the odometer & calendar as you get closer.
