By the way, what is everyone recommending for winter tires?
Thanks.

Why on earth wouldn't the guy just call a tow truck
Other than the lack of ability to stop or steer everything looked fine. Why would anyone buy winter tires???????? For this reason in the video.

uhm, this guy needs some lessons on handling situation like this. 1. too much ice and almost 0 traction = let the car rolls itself down rather than giving it more gas to move and slide. 2. when a quattro slides, you give it some gas to pull itself out. The 2nd one is one of the key that not many people know.
What on earth is he doing breaking constantly? Does the ASR/ESP do that after a certain slippage threshold?
The way to control a car in these conditions is by being in the right gear, massaging the gas pedal and steering correctly, nothing else is needed.
Yesterday in similar conditions and with winter rubber I was able to go safely at around 80KM/h in areas where I was sure I would not need to use the breaks
I run Dunlop 3D winters, they handle great in similar conditions. There are also Pirelli Sottozero II. I read in several places that the Dunlops are better, although I did not find an actual comparison yet.
one thing that isn't too clear on that video is the level of incline - I think it might be steeper than it looks. It's all well and good giving it gas to give it a chance to get traction and keep going, but there's a junction at the bottom of that road so there looks to have been no chance of this one working out well given the conditions and lack of winter tyre take-up in the UK.

On ice like that, there's pretty much no hope unless you're running studded tires.
It would appear to have been an ugly situation that just got uglier. What fun! (or not...)
Even SotoZeros wouldn't have helped there.

Possibly nothing was going to get this guy out of trouble on that street, but winter rubber would have at least increased his chances of getting out of there.
But yeah, we don't know the incline, and it looks like physics was constantly pulling him to the right hand side of the street.
UK roads aren't generally flat, they have a camber with the peak in the centre that slopes off to either side so that opposing cars are naturally pulled away from each other. on a slope, the combination of gravity and camber would have the effect seen in the video.

Ouch this video makes me cringe thinking of the wheels being kerbed when the car heads toward the sidewalk.
