Anyone ever move their R8 on their own trailer?

Considering buying a trailer so I can move the car around myself to various tracks without having to drive it there. Saw this video, was trying to figure out what sort of trailer this is....

Contact Mitch Clay at PPI Design USA. They trailer two R8's to the track all the time. (432) 682-4484. He can give you some advice. I have two friends from MNAUDI that also trailer their RS4 Audi's. Let me know if you want me to contact them for information on their trailers.

Yes. I towed my R8 home from the dealer in my enclosed trailer when I picked up my car in Feb in a snow storm.

The trick is how to tie the car down. You need some specialized strapping that goes over the tires to do it right.

I ended up just going through each wheel, which can be difficult, as well as damages the wheels over time.

If you have the right hooks in the deck of the trailer then this type of strap will work great:

you need three hooks in the deck per wheel to make these work.

I use both a custom enclosed trailer and/or the back of my Renegade motorhome garage. rmicrosys is right - the key is tie downs. I use Mac's and had them make custom wheel nets that fit the R8 and the superleggera with low profile ratchets that hook into either E-track or versatrack. I also have through the wheel tie downs that work well. I can't say enough about the quality of the tie downs from these guys

I transport with an enclosed trailer. My strapping system is such that goes through the wheels and secures the car that way instead of via attachement to the chassis*. I use 3" wide straps and E-trak on my trailer floor.

The through wheel straps come with protective sleeves that the insulate the straps from the wheels and avoid any damage to the wheels.

The best way to strap is use 8 of them. One on each corner headed straight out from each wheel and then one on each corner headed at a 45 degree diagonal - a total of four tie points on the trailer.

The fore/aft straps will keep the car from moving fore/aft, but will not keep the car from dancing left/right. The diagonals keep the car from moving left/right. It's a pain, but it's well worth the insurance of not having your car move around on/in a trailer, which can be very dangerous.

    * strapping a car down via the chassis, especially if you plan on traveling long distances is not a good idea. As the trailer moves down the road, it will bounce. The bounce will be transfered to the chassis and the chassis WILL move. Eventually this will lead to loose and/or released tie downs, which is not pretty. - try strapping down a car that has 18" of travel via the chassis. One bump on the road and you have a car that's free to move about the cabin at it's leisure.

I also use the over-the-tire 3-point straps in an enclosed trailer. There are some more threads about trailering the R8 here:

Re: Anyone ever move their R8 on their own trailer?

The trailer at the start of the video is an aluminum car carrier. One quality manufacturer I can recommend is Featherlite www.fthr.com.
Their open trailer is a model 3110. and the optional tire rack
    We have two of their enclosed trailers; a 24' 4926 and a 34' 4921 .

This is just a place to start your research - I'm sure there are other quality manufacturers out there.

Re: Anyone ever move their R8 on their own trailer?

I've been towing my racecar for a long time, always tied down with the body. Never had an issue with the car getting loose. The car has no suspension travel in the first place to worry about so the straps never get loose.

With the R8, I don't like the idea of going through the wheels with straps and pulling forward and back. It places undue stress on the suspension linkages in my mind. I much prefer going over the tire to hold the tire down. Held down properly over E-Track with the right straps, I'm sure that you will not have any issues with the car in a trailer.

8 straps to hold the car down is total overkill and not required in my mind.
