    Blown Engine Rod

Hello all,new member and new audi r8 v10 owner. purchased the car new and was following the break in period properly not exceeding 5500 rpm varring the rpms in all gears never hit redline so i loved the r8 the comfort looks and although couldnt push the car yet i could tell it wouldnt dissapoint.drove my car to the gym yesterday and on the way back noticed a weird ticking noise took it to the dealer thinking it was something minor and it turns out to be a failed engine rod at 500 miles! im really dissapointed anyone else have this problem and what could of caused this at only 500 miles?

i think this falls under really really bad luck my friend and may be the 1st case ever of a thrown rod in a stock r8 so far.
yo have a warranty so don't sweat it, although i bet you won't be driving your car for a month or so :-(

    Exclamation Re: Blown Engine Rod

Over here it's referred to as either a rod main bearing or rod small end bearing failure. Location, loc.,loc. Typically a blown rod busts through the engine block !! That would be a catastrophic failure !! 'Till you state your location we're all be playing a guessing game. Warranty is GOLDEN. IF the wrong oil was used by the owner...big bucks repair.

    Re: Blown Engine Rod

He said he bought it new. It must have factory oil.

If I were you I would also be nervous, however those of us with many miles on our R8s will tell you it is an anomaly. This is the first thrown rod I have read on R8talk in two years. The good news is you are getting an entire new drive train. The bad news you will be without your car for a time and you may be nervous for a while driving your car. I would only say don't be nervous.

See how they build and test your car. Hope this helps mitigate your fears.

Yes I bought it new it had original oil that came with car from the factory, they didn't give me details on the engine rod failure other than mine is the first one they ever heard of and ordered a new engine clutch and flywheel very quickly, engine and everything already arrived so I'm told, my concern is if and when I sell my car if it will effect the value

I doubt it, it's not like its a vintage muscle car that needs to be #'s matching

In fact vipers (especially 2004) had a defect where the crank bolt would lossen up and the motor would need a rebuild.
I know because i have one and the day i took it home a viper tech by the name of Ton Sessions told me via email to check it, and mine was loose too.
these blown vipers were sent to arrow racing for all the "rebuilds" and in fact the motors came back with 50hp more than the factory build!!!
these rebuilt motors actually are preferable to the stock built ones and we have seen no diminished value on a arrow rebuild car _FWIW

Definitely just a case of bad luck. The engines are assembled by hand, and we humans do make mistakes on occasion. Someone didn't torque something down quite right or an out of tolerance piece was used.

Fear not and don't baby the next engine. Warm it up and enjoy it.

    +1

A "ticking noise" sounds more like a rod knock than a broken rod.
