How long to get a production number?

I realize this could be like asking how long a piece of string is, but...

How long after placing an order with Audi does a dealer get a production number?

My order went in at the end of the year and I want to get a feel for how long I should wait before starting to pester the dealer.

Another way of asking a similar question:

How long before a production date did you get your production number? I've been promised a March date but I'm a little concerned that this may be "sales fluff".

Yes, I'm in that waiting mode and after barely more than a week it's already proving hard. Especially now I've found a buyer for my Porsche AND my Aston I could be forced to drive my Rover Just as well it's supercharged

It varies with the size of the dealer and where you are on their list. Look through the "Delivery Dates" sticky. Several have posted their experiences there. Time between order and delivery can be as short as 3-4 months or as long as nearly 3 years (in my case).

Ordered my R8 in early November and got a production number and build date after a couple of weeks. The dealership told me they had to get this from their NA rep. I was given a build date of the first week in Feb 2011 with delivery in early April 2011.
Yes, the wait is painful.

Ordered my v10 in September, was given a late Nov production date; this was delayed due to "carbon-ceramic Brake availablity" and car now in production to be delivered late Feb. So remember, you may get production date but it is not set in stone

So it looks like I should have a production date by the end of the month. OK, I'll breathe a little easier until February... :-)

After the Xmas break I was in the dealer today re new coupe.

If I sign on the dotted line within the next 2 days I have a production slot of week 10.(early March)

Delivery late April/early May.

Saw a beautiful Lambo 560-4 and a new 550-2 today for a extra $40k AUS ..available now

It sounds as if supply may be easing up. I had to wait over six months for a build date. Sure wish I could have ordered carbon ceramics for my 2011. Looks as if that's another item which is becoming real.
