what oil should I refill with?

Hi,

The minimum oil indicator showed up today and I'm wondering what oil I should refill with.

At my last oil change I saw the service guys put in 10l of 0w40 oil.

At my 2nd visit to the garage they topped it up with 1l of 0w30.

From what I understand it's not good to mix two different types?

Should I refill with 0w40?

I just get the oil from the dealer (but from the local VW dealership, because it's cheaper there). Castrol SLX Professional. At least in Canada, it's the cheapest approved oil around, and it's exactly what the dealership here puts in the car. I had a lot of issues trying to find any oil with the right approval on it at the local parts stores, so I just went to VW. Turns out they only charge 8.50$ a liter which isn't that bad at all.

I believe the embossing on the oil filler cap should say CASTROL.

I used to be bias towards MOBIL 1, but not anymore. I use CASTROL EDGE.

I read another report, the EDGE was developed for use on the Bugatti Veyron.

The recommended oil varies by country.

The UK manual (2008) states that the following should be used in the V8 depending on service type:

longlife 504 00
inspection 502 00 / 504 00

The recommended oil here was originally Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow 5w30 which was replaced by Castrol Edge 5w30

Don't I have to stick to the exact same oil they already put in last time? Is it dangerous to mix w30 with w40?

Use Castrol Edge 5w30 or 5w40 depending on your location. If you tell us where you are we'd be able to tell you which oil is probably already in your car.

I'm in Monaco.

As I wrote in the initial post I already had 10 l of 0w40 in the car and then they topped it up with 1 litre of 0w30. So I guess I'll continue with 0w40?

I put some shell helix ultra 5w40 in.
