Cracked Windshield

Hi guys,

Just want to share with you that in the past October I went to my R8 dealer to change the windshield that cracked in August.
I thinked that the cracked could be caused by the heat that the car have while exposed in the Summer hot temps since there was not visible marks of rocks or something else.
But last week while I went to my Audi dealer (not R8 dealer) I found out that there is another R8 in my little town (also black, and now I know why people thinked that I was somewhere and I was not ) and he went there to see if they could change the windshield, and they give the same answer I had, must go to R8 dealer!

I started thinking, could this be caused by the chassis aluminium movement/expansion?
The crack was on the same place, top middle, and cracked all the way down rigth!

Audi engineer sayed that could be caused by the extreme forces that the windshield is supporting and is part of the chassis rigidity itself.

Two in the same town with the identical problem is like the odds of winning the lottery so it sure sounds like a warranted item. If others have also had this experience, you all should talk and Audi should listen.

mine's cracked and getting replaced this sat. top driver's corner. also- no sign of stone chip.

Jilted lover getting even, perhaps? Cracked your windshield once, and then seeing your car's twin with the windshield "fixed" so soon, decided to crack it again!

It cracked exactly like mine!!

So I assume that Audi didn't think enought on this theme, expecting clients to pay new windshields anytime a rock hit it!!! (My insurance cover this at least)

That 1inch strip of clear bra material across the top of the windshield apparently addressed the problem, I've had no more cracks since adding it.

The first time it happened, the dealer thought it was a stress crack, so they paid for it. The second time, I got my insurance company to pay for it. Many auto insurance policies include full cost windshield replacement. Usually they use some third party service like Safelite, but Safelite won't do an R8. So my insurance company told me to take the car to the dealership, And they paid the full bill. It was about $1000 USD.

i am arranging for the strip to be installed after mine gets replaced. funny how it happened soon after i met mothertucker!

The replacement cost on mine was ~$1600.
