Smile Is this a good price??

Hello everyone. New member here. I don't have an R8 yet but I hope to get one soon. I've been looking on Ebay for a potential 2010 V10 acquisition, but since I live north of the border (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), I'm a little skeptical in buying an expensive vehicle sight unseen and then importing it to Canada. The prices for a slightly used 2010 V10 in the States are attractive, however, when you factor in that Canada Customs will ding the importer a 6.1% duty on the vehicle + the customary 5% sales tax, plus the cost to ship the vehicle to me + the cost needed to convert the vehicle to Canadian specs, I'm thinking that I'm better off confining my search in Canada, which brings me to my question...

I found a Canadian Audi dealer online who has a brand new 2010 V10 coupe (Suzuka grey) , manual, with the following options: CF interior, CF engine trim, CF side blade, Enhanced Leather, and Titanium Wheels (?). Since the vehicle has not been registered, it still carries the full 4-yr, 80,000 km (50,000 mi) warranty. The asking price is $171, 000 Canadian. I know that R8 pricing in Canada is higher than in the States, but on Ebay, I see people asking for $150,000 - $155,000 for their full Carbon R8 V10's with less than 5,000 miles on them. The dealer claims the original sticker price on the vehicle is $195,000 before taxes. My question: Do you think the $171,000 asking price is reasonable? Or should I opt to order a brand new 2011 vehicle with similar options for around the same sticker price of $195,000? Should I try to get the price down to around $165,000 or lower? Is there an advantage in getting the 2011 model for MSRP (i.e. $20,000+ difference) or are the 2010 and 2011 R8's essentially identical? I'm not too concerned about the depreciation since I plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time. If I decide to buy the vehicle, I plan to visit the dealership (not in the same province) to personally inspect the vehicle.

Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Rico

I would work on getting the Suzuka grey for a bit less if possible. No difference between 2010 & 2011, so that should be a non-issue. Suzuka grey is a rare and beautiful color as well.
    Best of luck!

Re: Is this a good price??

Doing up a simple excel sheet, I've factored in an R8 V10 brand new from Calgary (after checking their Royal Oak dealership) with 5% GST, misc fees, PDI, gas guzzler to be...

    Base $173,000
    Options total $15300
    Freight $2750
    Gas Guzzler $2000
Misc Fees $250 (tire tax, gov fees etc)
    GST @5% on base + options $9415

    Grand Total: $202715.

With your Ebay in Canada option, you're looking at:

Base + Desired Options included :$171000
HST at XX% on vehicle $22230
    Total before shipping: $193230
I don't know what the cost is for shipping is, unless you buy it at that province and drive it back to cowtown in minus 20 C.

So far your savings are $9485 but that will diminish with the costs mentioned above. Drive a V10 across the #1 west bound over a 5 day journey and with cargo space meant only for a weekender trip - would sure make for an adventure!

I personally would never make a purchase of that magnitude without seeing the product first online. I would want to see it certainly with my own eyes. Maybe that's just me being paranoid (if you go the ebay route).

Too bad the car isn't in AB to take advantage of zero PST huh.

    Good luck with the purchase.

Thanks for the reply but this is not an EBay ad. This is from Auto Trader and it's from a dealership in Toronto. My understanding is that since the car will be registered in Alberta, the car is exempt from having to pay the Ontario PST, so I will only have to pay the 5% GST. This will be a deal breaker for me if I have to pick up the additional 8% PST as well - and the dealership knows that. I have a friend who lives in Toronto and he's checking the vehicle out for me. If it checks out, I'll fly into to Toronto to inspect it myself before making the purchase. I don't look at the trip to Toronto as an additional expense since it will give me an opportunity to visit my friend. Without the additional PST, I'll save another $13,700 so my total savings is more than $20,000 over what I can get it here for in cowtown. I'm also working out a deal for the dealership to pick up the shipping cost to Calgary.

    Cheers.

Good luck. Driving it at -20 C, snow and bad weather is no issue whatsoever, just make sure they put winter rubber on it, which they probably will. I doubt a Canadian dealership would let you drive the car out during winter with summer rubber.

HI Buddy, not too many suggestions, but here's an experience from a canadian who was looking in Florida and decided to buy a 2011 spyder in Montreal. I didn't see if it was a Spyder or not that you are looking at, but the one I bought was a Spyder with almost no options, as it is almost fully equiped. If it's a Spyder then leather on dash is a problem for upkeep and the carbon is not as dramatic on a spyder as on a coupe (personal opinion)
In Canada from what I understand the only available options are leather dash, carbon, and the colour. The GPS and other stuff is pretty well standard. The Suzuka I think is a few thousand more, and a nice color I might add.
So my summary assement is that I bought it from Montreal, and there are no waiting lists or premiums and I was able to negotiate a 41/2 % off retail which for the spyder is $187,000.
As far as I could tell , the price advantage in Florida did not justify the hassle. My buddy bought a US car and it is some trouble. If you save $20,000 worth considering, otherwise should be researched and depends on one"s level of acceptable suffering.
The other point and it doesn't seem to apply to you, is that when you sell a US used car in Canada, the value is less than a bona fide Canadian car.
I think that Toronto has a bigger market for the Audi, and if you call some MOntreal dealers, you might strike a better deal . However to be considered is the courtesy cars and service, which should take in some weight..good luck

Sorry, I just noticed you are from Calgary, and thought you were from Toronto. Much of what I said still applies as they have lots of oil dollars in Calgary which we don't have in Montreal

Not worth it unless you get a better deal and you fly in to inspect it. Don't buy a vehicle sight unseen. Too much risk

I happened to eye this particular exact ad a few days ago going e-window car shopping on a whim and saw this particular guy. I purposely didn't want to post up that particular ad to preserve it and give other potential serious buyers a gander at it and put unneeded pressure on you.

Indeed the PST will be a deal breaker if there's no way around it. I don't know too much on how its like to buy out of province.

Thinking about it $171 is not bad at all considering a used 1,500 km V10 with no extended leather, and no carbon blades, jet blue exterior, r-tronic is selling for $174 at Aston Martin Calgary ( I sat inside and its nice, but its not something worth THAT much for I think with barebones options I personally think).

So far around Cowtown I've seen let's see....at least a good 3 R8 V10s on the streets these past 15 months.

There's 1 right now with all the specs including Suzuka Grey however its R-tronic and has $10,000 of additional extra CF up in Royal Oak Audi that I saw. It's beautiful, but too much (Over $216k exc GST I think).

The jet blue V10 you're referring to is at Distinctive Collection and I checked it out as well. In fact, I made a low ball offer on the vehicle thinking that they may be motivated to sell it knowing that this vehicle has been there since last summer. I definitely do not think it's worth $174,000 and I don't particularly care for the R-tronic. I also looked at the one at Royal Oak and the only difference between the car in Toronto and this one is the R-tronic and of course, the model year. So if you take away $11,500 for the R-tronic option, the price is down to $204,000 + GST = roughly $214,000 vs. the Toronto car at $171,000 + GST = approx. $180,000, so I'm saving $24,000.

I did some googling with respect to out of province purchases and came across the Ontario website that discusses specifically the situation I'm in. According to this site, as long as I don't take possession of the vehicle in Ontario (i.e. the dealer shipping the vehicle to my home province of Alberta), I do not have to pay their RST or PST, so I'm only on the hook for the GST. This is good news. I just need to work on the dealership to knock off a few more thousand dollars on their asking price and I could be a new proud owner of a Suzuka Grey V10 in a few weeks . My buddy checked the car out for me and he told me that the car is as described - brand new with no blemishes whatsoever. The pictures the dealership sent me definitely support my friend's description.

    Cheers,
    Rico
