Gumball Rally 2011 with the R8

Hey Guys,

After almost a year of ownership, i have decided to enter this years gumball rally from London to Istanbul. I have to say I have really enjoyed the r8 and i think its a great choice for this race.....

Looked at several different cars but overall i think the audi is the most comfortable exotic I have driven, going to need it for a 3500 mile trek.

Just wanted to ask the veterans on here, any extra parts in particular you would take other than tires? I'll do my best to represent R8 owners among the elite

Motor oil...at least two 1-litre bottles of Castrol Syntec or Motul in the correct viscosity for your country's specifications.

This on top of making sure all your essential fluids are topped off and brake pads have plenty of life left. Have fun and post lots of pics!

Never done the gumball

but done a few rallies from london to Transylvania, Portugal.

Tyres got a punchers was hard to get tyres in some places.
Oils keep it topped up
Cooking brakes (high speed braking )
Accidents (take duct tape, string, back up team with a trailer)

and enjoy it....

A good set of laser jammer and radar detector for (hopefully) less trouble with LEOs, first aid kit, plenty of food and water for long stretches, extra phone, extra GPS with maps of the route, laptop with 3G modem, flash lights, the hams amongst us would want to take a 2M handy, some basic weaponry, a bunch of well hidden 500 Euro notes for emergencies and strange encounters.

Keep your ID/passports outside of your bag/wallet.

Most of the route travels through civilized areas, but I would take extra care in some areas until Belgrade and especially after Belgrade to Turkey.

A trailing car that can actually have backup rims/rubber and possibly other stuff such as a change of cloths - taking stuff to suffice a week of partying for two persons in an R8 would be considered a mighty challenge in itself.

In all seriousness I think the two best cars for the Gumball would be an R8 or a 997TT. Something that can just gobble up the miles, be reliable, and isn't too fragile.

Are you coming stateside? Might want to invest in a police scanner/cb radio. The truckers will take care of you over here!

I am in the grid; entry accepted. I'll be taking either my 911 or a new R8 V10.

I doubt any prep is require: car, passport and that's it.

I did this a couple of years ago and it was absolutely brilliant. It's team based so not like gumball and is focussed around great roads, great food and most importantly all having a laugh. I'm also pencilled in for this year as I was in the winning team a couple of years ago.
