Missing rubber cover near rear wheels

I just noticed that one of the rubber covers that are on the underside of the vehicle near the rear tires is missing. Not sure for how long. I will take into service ASAP to get it replaced. What do these covers do, and do I risk damage by driving the vehicle before I get it replaced?

A picture of the existing one on the other side would help us to figure out what you are referring to please.

My original description was poor. First photo shows the intact part on the left and the missing one on the right. The second one provides a view inside the hole created by the missing part/boot.

That's referred to as an air duct by Audi in ELSAWIN. It just directs airflow under the vehicle. You can drive the vehicle until you get it refitted without any problems.

Those are notorious for leaving their home. A large water puddle, a large pot hole and a piece of wood in the middle of the street have managed to remove mine.

They are very simple replacement and they run about 30 bucks (as I recall). It's held in with six #30 Torx (may be #25) bolts. Make sure you order the correct side, as there is a left and right.

Don't pay the shop to do it - go to your local auto parts store, pick up the correct Torx bit, lay on your back and put the new one on.

They are inserted towards the back of the car first - there's a small tongue that fits into the hole it resides in - then screw it in. Don't over tighten the screws - just enough that it's starting to get snug is enough. If the rubber under the screw starts to distort and turn with the fastener, you're right there at tight enough - I usually get to this point and then back off just enough that the rubber goes back to it's natural position.

These rubber scoops pull air from under the car and direct it into the exhaust area to cool it.

#27 Torx bit is what's required.

I lost one of mine as well. It's a cheap part and replacement work takes two minutes.

I'd say it's very clever on Audi's part to make them soft, otherwise if caught by something strong it could cause damage to the underside, this way they just tear away

@KfabR8, FWIW 30 bucks is a lot per piece.

Thumbs up Re: Missing rubber cover near rear wheels

I was Black Flagged for a hanging rubber. No worries track workers. Just let her hang. Dealer replaced both, installed them backwards ... and forgot to charge me.

$30? Only £9 in the UK - we actually get something cheaper?!?

I could be quite wrong about the price - may have been for a pair. Eh, what ever.
