So I took my two sons out car shopping. We had looked at the Porsche 911TT and GT2/3 (I really liked the GT3), the Ferrari Italia 458 and the Audi R8 V10. I am, and have always been, a Porsche guy.

I asked my sons . . . . "If you could buy any car what would it be?" They both agreed an Audi R8 V10 was the car to own!

    I told my sons I was going with the Porsche GT3 . . .

    On a whim, I called the Audi dealer and asked if I could order the R8 V10? . . . "Yes of course" . . . .

"How about the GT . . . is it avaliable?"

"Yes! we have one GT avaliable."

    I ordered the R8 GT!.

My dad never asked. Glad I did.

July 2011 delivery. Worth every penny and more!

Awesome! I have two sons and can relate to you completely. Wonderful choice you made: with any model Porsche (except the mid-engine $450K Carrera GT which they don't make any more) you'd see yourself coming and going because they are so common. By comparison, there are very few R8s and even far fewer R8 GTs, so if being unique is important to you, you're going to be one happy dude come July! Welcome to the forum!

That 458 is sure mighty tempting though if I had the budget for it. In any case, nice story and nice car (R8GT), post some pics when you get it.

I had a deposit on a 458 starting last July and there's no doubt it is truly an amazing car, but I came to my senses and bought my V10 Spyder because:
    A) It's a Spyder and there won't be a 458 Spider for at least another year or two;
    B) I wanted a fully manual transmission, not "floppy paddles" as Jeremy Clark calls them; and,
    C) Not only could I get my R8 immediately (Dec. 2nd) and not have to wait until next summer, but I saved about $100,000.

Welp, I'll be someone's doctor on call every minute for a year just to get my hands on one (458)

If I were in the market for a supercar coupe that would cost me in the high 200's, and if distance from home to dealership weren't an issue, I think I'd get a Mclaren just to be able to humiliate any conceited 458 driver out there because they think they are the apex predator when they simply are fooling themselves and have bought into the hype that Ferrari has manipulated them and the world press into believing (except Chris Harris). The 458 is a better-looking car than the Mclaren, hands down, but not a better car by any other measurement.

I was holding out for the new 911 but my son convinced me to get the R8 and I haven't looked back. Congrats on getting a great car!

Thumbs up Re: New Member, New Order, Porsche GT3 or New R8 V10

FWIW, I think that's very clear thinking on your part. If I had the option, I'd sure try to hold out for the Mclaren over the 458 as well.

Since the Ferrari 458 was mentioned, I thought I'd reprint for everyone to be reminded of why I am now anti-Ferrari and very much pro-Chris Harris, automotive journalist. Here is his rant which justifiably crucifies Ferrari:

I hope the forum's auto-censor program doesn't kill the link but if so, let me know and I'll print the entire article in a fresh post. Definitely worth reading!
