    New Spyder

    Hi everyone,

First, I would like to thank existing members for all the useful information I was able to find on this forum.

After four long months of waiting, I finally received my new R8 Spyder two weeks ago. Daytona grey, black interior, manual. I will post pictures soon. My previous car was a 997 Carrera S which I thought was in supercar territory. I loved the Porsche but the R8 is in a completely different league. I never get tired of looking at the car and hearing the sound of that unbelievable V10 engine.

I already have done close to 2,000 km (that's how much I love the car). Audi says there is no need to change the oil yet but I am still tempted to do so. Any views?

Congrats on the new car. Always enjoy hearing the excitement from a new owner.

As for the oil, if it makes you sleep better, change it. An oil change will never hurt you.

    Re: New Spyder

I've posited before that we Spyder owners appreciate the sound of the OEM exhaust more than Coupe owners because we are less isolated from it as they are, so I agree with you that the V10 sounds awesome. It's even better once you disable the valves that keep it quiet at low RPMs.

Per this months issue of Top Gear magazine, on the rare occasion you might drive the Spyder with the roof up, lowering the rear windows will provide excellent access to the exhaust sound. Although I'm sure you've already figured this out.

Of course. We don't get a glass engine lid but we do get a power windowlet that lets use hear the engine and the exhaust, but I rarely have my top up and when I do, I usually drive my other car.

Congratulations on your new car, and welcome aboard.

Coupe owners can certainly roll the windows down for sound, but even then it's still too quiet. Audi set out to create a luxury exotic sports car, and they did a superb job. They just went a little too far on the exhaust. Maybe the chief exhaust engineer had just come over from Lexus.

Try driving a Spyder and you'll hear the difference. Even MonkeyBoy thought mine was aftermarket and he's owned several R8s and has a GT on order. My car hardly sounds like a Lexus!

I think they do a pretty good job of breaking in engines at the factory these days, but I'd change the oil at 2K kms if I was you :-)

From one new owner to another congrats. I agree in the spyder sound is outstanding. I always have the rear window down. I have not heard the V10 coupe or V8 to compare though. The weather here has been so poor I have not been able to drop the top yet. Waiting for spring to arrive!
