White smoke

Hi guys, was out for a long drive like a week ago before giving in my car for a gearbox change. During the drive ( around 200km drive) the car asked to add 1L of oil twice. I had added 1L just before setting off as well. Anyways at audi they saw that the level of oil was actually high in the car (1L too much). They also noticed the car is blowing white smoke from the exhast heavily when u press the throttle. They say it is because of the excess oil.
My question is are they right? Also is it likely that having too much oil and driving it for that amount of distance would have caused any permanent damage to the engine? Audi say they will just drain out the excess. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Audi is correct. Besides draining away that excess engine oil they will need to fix that engine oil quantity sensor. The overfill that entered the combustion chamber via the crankcase ventilation system resulted in that white smoke you described. Have them go through a through clean-up procedure due to excessive oil ingression via the crankcase ventilation system. Also check for proper operation of that PCV (control valve/bypass piston).

Refer to the engine oil top-up procedure depicted in the user manual.

I hope that Audi will pay for it but in the manual it specifically states that you should check the oil level by dipstick before adding oil and to verify that the level is adequate afterwards.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, ktdre. I relied solely on the computers for a while before I discovered the car even had a dipstick. (makes me a dipstick !).And some reading up on how to properly monitor oil level enhanced me even further.
