Indeed ... I think there have been other reviews where they have liked the steering 'feel' ... but they nearly always go on to say something like ... the 911 has better feel and provides a better connection with the road surface.

This time though ... Car and Driver have told us what 95% plus of drivers need to know ... i.e. that it has more than enough 'feel' and 'feedback' to be able to enjoy driving the car ... and possibly more importantly that is is good enough provide the required confidence so that ... you can get the car go, where you want it to.

You may need to change your screen resolution to read it (1600x1200 works!)

C&D subjectively thought the 911 had a better exterior design (classic shape) and was more practical (rear "seats"). The R8 had a better interior, ride, handling, structure, primary controls and engine - pretty impressive!
They don't, however, mention VALUE, and at their estimated as tested price of $130k versus a 2008 face-lifted C4S with 370 HP and 7 speed DSG and pricing under $100k, I'm not so sure any more...

Simply said-if you want to wait for PDK in 997 line(BUT, NOT for Turbo,GT3/GT3RS or forthcoming GT2 models)-do not buy R8. R8 will be available threw out its model life only as manual and R-Tronic.

I was thinking about 997 Turbo along side my forthcoming R8, but I am not sure about 997 turbo any more...

If the R8 base price comes in at 110k, they haven't really beat the 911 which delivers great bang for our buck in comparison. Audi said initially 115k fully loaded, which would imply a low 100's base price.

They really got the pricing wrong, a 911 turbo starts at 123k, it will be difficult to ignore and the mentioned the GT3 as well which starts at 106. Hopefully it isn't too expensive for its own good as it is not a better sports car than the GT3 or Turbo.

    Sticky,

    Regarding price... In USA only!

In every European country R8 is cheaper then similary specs 997 Carrera 4S...
Audi priced R8 just right for European market IMHO.

You just need to know that base price for 997 turbo is 138500Euro in Germany!! See the difference? And base price for R8 is 104400Euro in Germany...

Your point for price is valid ONLY for USA.

I agree with you that 997 turbo and GT3/GT3RS are excellent and capable sportscars. Better then R8? Probably... But, only in sheer power and speed IMHO.
See, new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera will be faster on any track then 997 turbo or GT3/GT3RS models(belive me, it will!)... But, is it better sportscar? For Porsche enthusiast(or die hard fan) for sure not...

Did you see the data from latest German Sport Auto Supertest of 997 GT3RS? It is not faster at all on the Ring then 997 GT3 version! Time is the same for both versions-7.48min! And price difference between both version is pretty big...

I take it that is ... as far as you are concerned ... and ... in your humble opinion ... based on what other people have written about it ... ... or have you been fortunate enough to be one of those people invited to Las Vegas to drive it for yourself ...

For me, personal preference is a huge deciding factor when buying anything that has a large price tag ... only time will tell if the R8 will outperform the C4S and pitch it towards GT3 territory ... I know Audi are aiming at 911 territory but I'm not sure they are aiming as high as Turbo territory ... so that comparison is irrelevant ... imho.
