A must have electric race car?

Posted for those of you that admire the future.

    Call me old fashioned but...really?

"Must have," and "electric race car" don't exactly cross paths for me either.

A hybrid with a turbine engine (capable of being fueled by whatever is on-hand) providing charge for an electric motor has a strong appeal for me - as range would be a killer for where I live. I think it would take some adjustment to get used to the lack of noise, but the other sensations would be novel.

If money grew on my trees...I'd start with an entry level electric -hybrid... But the Porsche 918 version. Porsche GAS power, with an electric motor on each wheel, for a big boost of power at the press of a button. I beleive its' carbon foot print is pretty small too.

An electric racecar is so unpractical. One would need a huge stockpile of batteries, and generators/chargers for it. Where I am, we have 20 minute sprint races for our classes so one could possibly do it. But to match a 160wheel hp engine in a small car for 20 minutes at 'WOT', and electric powerplant would need a lot of batteries.

sure but it's doable - look at the tesla roadster.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Roadster

the dyno chart for this shows just over 250bhp at the wheels:

top gear are being sued by tesla for saying this only has a 55 mile range at full throttle.

Re: A must have electric race car?

Hybrid would be the only sensible way to go as the batteries are self generated.

Imagine in the future if eventually every person converted to a all electric car and the power station requirement needed throughout the whole world.

Most cities are already at peak electrical load output just servicing current city usage.

A bigger question is if Hybrid or Electric start to take away some serious market share away from the gasoline car...do we seriously think major oil countries will sit idly by and not meet the challenge head on.

    Gas prices will plummet aggressively.

maybe it will fuel a real effort to push small scale domestic renewable generation - like they do in germany where I believe they get the same price for electricity they produce and sell back to the grid as they pay when they buy electricity from the grid unlike other countries where there is a huge disparity and disincentive.

Regardless of the motor car future,it is a very smart way for a city.

We have similar here on a small scale but unfortunately it is not heavily promoted or particularly encouraged(by governments)at this stage.

Randombloke..what do you think the "experience" would be of driving this Leaf around the track
