V8 terrible value for what you get

I haven't been able to find a thread about this so I want to see what your opinions are on this subject. But on a lot of other non r8 forums there is a lot of negative talk regarding the R8 v8 saying that its basically 2 or 3 times the price of other vehicles that are just as fast and pretty similar on all other performance levels. It would seem that people are only paying that high price for the looks/status. I know the v10 is a different story. Basically it just seems like the v8 is terrible value for what it is and what you can get else where.

To answer honestly, your original assumption is total crap, and not worthy any kind of response, except to suggest that you take your question somewhere else.

Halperin, I think you need to actually drive the car before you form an opinion, not troll here with stuff you've read on other forums.

Yes. You're absolutely right. It's not worth driving. In fact, if I were you, I wouldn't even consider an R8. Completely overpriced and exaggerated. Definitely don't buy one.

Things are worth what people will pay for them. That is the only way that value is measured. I was very happy to pay what I paid for my car. I wouldn't have purchased a GTR for that price. It's much faster than an R8 and most Ferrari's and Porsches...and seats 4.

    That isn't what it's about.

The average price of an R8 4.2 is probably around $135k. To which vehicles in the $45k-$67.5k range are you referring?

A Rolex Submariner is $5000 and a Timex Ironman is $60. They're both waterproof watches and the Timex can do more. It's also got an alarm, stopwatch, and countdown timer and 2 time zones. Is the Rolex worth $5000? Yes, because that's what people will pay for it. Is the Timex worth $100? No, because if it were, that's what Timex would charge. In fact, you can get the Timex regularly at almost 50% discount. Good luck getting a discount on the Sub.

The R8 V8 is a hand built mechanical piece of art. It's visually stunning, designed and engineered almost to perfection, superbly balanced, wonderful to drive and a thrill to own.

Yes it's worth it and I would have paid more.

If Fashion Cat is seeing this, then I hope you stay the course and buy the dream car of yours one day; you remind me of myself a few years back concerning buying an R8.

The only cheap things that I would look forward to are movie tickets, malpractice insurance, BBQ briquets, prime rib, fish prices, gallon of milk and orange juice. Not watches (I prefer Panerai brand btw) or certain cars. If the OP's value significantly resides in a car that is fast and considered an exotic but not a terribly expensive buy then may I suggest a used corvette or the GTR; it would keep my R8 special if one less person bought such a thing.

Totally agree. I bought the car without even having to do a test drive; have been a loyal German car brand fan then got hooked on le mans races to which I lusted after the r8 since 2008. I don't race the car in a track, nor do I have the time or desire yet. I certainly have the ego strength to ignore whatever high HP car there is around me in a given moment.. .all that comforts me is the fact that my car has a racing heritage, is uncommon, and beyond the purchasing reach of many others who otherwise would hype HP over the many qualities of the R8 V8. Don't care about buying a cadillac, mustang, corvette or GT-R;they don't excite me. I am a true Audi fan and so is the wife.

@rawg, I prefer to avoid cheap meat and I sure hope you're paying for fresh orange juice rather than some cheap chemical soup of who knows what.

@Bodhii, @desperado, to go back to something gazza1 wrote yesterday if I'm not mistaken, these forums have been characterized by friendly talk, let's try to keep in that way.

@halperin, judging by your posts clearly price bothers you a lot. Buy a new or used BMW M3 4.2L, it's a great car and probably more within the range you're willing to pay. Don't over stretch yourself. Buy an R8 when you're ready for it.

Re: V8 terrible value for what you get

If you are fretting about what people on other car forums say, then you may have a problem that an r8 may not be able to fill.

Others have expressed it perfectly in this thread - the r8 is more than the sum of it's parts - the engine and performance are only one aspect of that.

It would seem that people are only paying that high price for the looks/status.
that's an argument that pops up at every level of the car market. people who buy econo-box runabouts say the same about bmw/audi/merc drivers - yet anyone who actually owns one knows there is more to it than just a huge premium for a badge.

For most r8 buyers in the real world, it's the complete package that makes the r8 a compelling buy - it's a different thing than people playing "virtual car buyer" on the forums..
