    Number of questions...

    Hi all,

questions mainly about the r tronic....

1). With the r tronic how if your at a traffic Jam or at the lights do you put it in neutral? Or leave it in A?

2). When would you recommend to do the first oil change. I'm at 1300 miles currently.

3). With the r tronic on breaking when it's in A mode, do use simply use the breakes or try and use gears as well?

4). In Auto modendo you try and anticipate the gear change and come off the gass pedal ?

    Thanks.
    Kind regards,

    Xto

First and foremost please add your location to your profile. Second, please search the forum.

    1. When I reach traffic lights I keep my foot on the brake pedal to keep the vehicle in 1st gear otherwise the car will automatically shift to neutral and then I would have to put my foot on the brake then select auto or manual mode before accelerating away.

    2. 5000 miles

    3. I personally change down the gears with the paddles before and in some cases whilst braking but you could allow the engine to change down for you as you just use the brake pedal. If I am in 5th and begin to brake, my R8 makes an excellent exhaust blip noise when it changes down to 3rd from that 5th gear with the Tubi exhaust.

    4. I do not let off the gas when changing gear.

I never drive in A - only ever manual. If I'm going to be stopped for a very short while then I just hold on the foot brake, otherwise I let it automatically "ping" into neutral after a few seconds.

2). When would you recommend to do the first oil change. I'm at 1300 miles currently.
I just follow the servicing schedule - that seems to vary country to country. I expect the first service will be around 12-18 months and something like 5k-8k miles. In the meantime, I'll just top it up as and when the level drops into the "fill" section on the dipstick.

3). With the r tronic on breaking when it's in A mode, do use simply use the breakes or try and use gears as well?
I don't drive in A. In manual mode, I use some engine braking in conjunction with the brake pedal.

4). In Auto modendo you try and anticipate the gear change and come off the gass pedal ?
as above, I don't drive in A. If I did, I wouldn't come off the gas - it's smooth enough for me "as is".

50p; thanks for your replies, i prefer to keep location private. i did search, but im really after people own driving preferences rather than possible advice from audi dealers or the manual.

I always feel its im in standstill traffic or at a long traffic light that i should put it in neutral.

Randombloke: thats dedication! city driving i get lazy and leave it in Auto.
    Kind regards,

    1. Always put it in neutral regardless of how long the traffic light is. Never in A.
    2. Paid $1000.00 for Audi to do all fluid changes. Only have 1000 miles so far.
    3. Use combination of brakes and gears in manual mode.
    4. Shift manually, get the revs up, let off gas, often shift from 3rd to 5th or even 6th. Florida has very few hills.

We don't require your street address or gps location but which continent would be beneficial.

agree - I think the least people can do is indicate where they are in the world. That provides context for experiences being shared and also helps people know if what they are going to chip in will be relevant and/or correct given there are some important differences out there (eg recommended oil grades, warranties etc).

A general location really is all that's needed and requested. Many questions are very market specific and you may end up with bad answers to questions you may ask, per the market you're in.

I'm new to the R-tronic (had it for about two weeks now), after three years of an MT6. I like it a lot.

Generally I toss the trans into neutral when I come to a light or stop that I know will take longer than 10 to 15 seconds. Just push the lever to right and then back to the left. I have discovered that I'll forget that I have taken my foot off the brake and it won't go into gear until you do - so I look like a fool and rev away at the said stop. I'm getting better about not doing this, though.

My reason for this (and it may be incorrect?) is to limit the amount of time that the throw out bearing sees. No reason in sitting there with the clutch disengaged, putting time on the bearing in my eyes.

First oil change is when the car informs me that it wants it.

I hit the sport button as part of my start up procedure. Start car, disengage parking brake, select gear, hit sport button and then off to enjoy a drive.

I'll toss the trans into A mode when I'm on my way back with my morning coffee or occasionally so I have a free hand to share with my girlfriend. Otherwise, it's always in manual mode.

I'll let the car do the downshifting if I'm lazy (or have my girlfriend in the car with me - free hand thing...) but I've always used the transmission (in the manual cars) to do my braking and I do the same thing with the R-tronic system.

The ability to pull the paddle, have the engine instantly rev match and then feel the compression braking from the engine is exhilarating. It does it so quickly and with such great precision, why wouldn't one use this feature? It brings out the 16 year old in you!

Auto mode - eh, I sort of lift on occasion, trying to force the trans to select the next gear (and not spill my morning java). It's not the smoothest of moves, though. First to second can be a bit of a hesitation, jerk maneuver in both A and M modes, especially if you're on the fun pedal at all. It's probably the hardest shift to master.

    Re: Number of questions...

I got my car last summer and tracked it once in the fall, then it sat all winter. It didn't seem right to do a bunch of track events this summer on that oil so I changed it at 2500mi or so. Generally, even synthetic oil really should be changed annually, especially if the car sits for prolonged periods. Audi does not seem to be concerned and I am not saying I know better than their engineers, but when in doubt it can't hurt to change it.

If you are sill rolling, even at 1 mph in neutral, you can still catch 1st gear without applying the brake. And it's always a smooth engagement.
