Here is one answer and a good indicator of what we are paying for.

Can't believe every lump goes though this, it'd slow production down too much.

Not really, keep in mind they only build 17 cars a day. That equates to 2 per hour if they use one test cell or one per hour if they use two test cells.

Isn't that from the nat geo megastructures episode on the r8 building?
I didn't think they did this for all the engines - just a sample?

Every last one
good to know that they do - I guess that's why we hear of so few engine failures with the r8.

Some of the Montblanc cup cars have gone two race seasons without a teardown.

That's why you also really don't have to worry 'that much' about the engine breaking procedure. It's already been redlined hard. Though, even though I already knew that they tested each engine like that, I still obeyed the engine drive-in procedure to keep a tighter engine. I didn't want to have a loose engine that burns a lot of oil.
After I saw this show and the testing at full RPMS of this engine I was wonder whey do we have to be so skiddish with this for the first 1600 miles and keep it under 6000 RPMS?
Didnt make too much sense to me after viewing the entire video.
I will play it by ear but if the dealer can analyze the black box if there are problems and say I over did it,, then I will abide for the first 1600 miles as per the rules.
one answer I've seen is that there are a lot more components to the r8 that just the engine itself. also, even at full tilt an hours running is only the equivalent of a couple of hundred miles driving - and then there's the issue of the loading differences in the real world vs the rig they use.
