    Coming from GT3, R8 V10 track questions

Sold my GT3 and just got V10 with APR ECU upgrade. When tracking the GT3 the worst thing you can ever do is let off the accelerator in a turn which from experience I learned to keep my foot in it even if I did not break hard enough going into the turn and I felt I was too hot and just drive through it. Also slow in and fast out was always the way to go with the GT3. What happens if you let up on the gas in the turn if feel you are too hot in the R8 V10? How does the car steer with the AWD and the mid-engine compared to the GT3? What is the fastest way around the track in the V10? How is understeer compared to GT3? Will increasing the tire widths to 245/305 front/rear help? I had changed my fronts on the the GT3 to 245 from the 235 and it reduced the understeer some. Thanks for any suggestions. I have my first track weekend in September in the R8 on a track that I am familiar with which should help immensely in getting acclimated to the new car.

Great questions, I'm also interested in the responses, coming from a GT2.

What tires are you going to run on track?

The stock Pirelli P Zeros are on it right now and will use those up first. When I get new tires, I plan on getting the Michelin Pilot Super Sports which I had on my GT3 and just absolutely loved them. Almost definitely go to the 245/305 setup as well.

I'm definitely going to have to try those Super Sports when I run through the P Zeroes as well. Are you going to get a Track tire as well, like a corsa system or pilot cup sports?

I for one am planing to get a set of OZ Ultraleggeras along with some MPSC's from the 'Rack. That way I can still drive the car to/from the track; have a (slight) increase in wet weather performance over an Hoosier R6 type tyre, plus leave them on the car in the warm weather if I want to. Definitely the 245/305 sizing however.

Check out this thread from a while back when I was asking the same kinds of questions:

Just sticking with the PSS tires. My instructor at the last DE said he thought they performed as well as the Sport Cups. I could not believe how sticky they were and yet how quiet and comfortable on the road. And they have the mileage warranty on top of that!

I looked at the other thread but I really don't see any answers to my questions beside just the tire set up. If anyone can answer my questions, I would really appreciate it...

Re: Coming from GT3, R8 V10 track questions

I can possibly help with a few items as I've tracked the R8 V8 and V10 extensively along with a GT3RS v2. I run both cars on stock setup except for changing to Pagid yellows and Motul brake fluid.

The driving characteristics of the V10 are such that you will find it more neutral and way less prone to lift oversteer that we're used to from the GT3. On the downside the R8 is heavier and has greater understeer. I find that staying on power through corners (rather than neutral throttle with the GT3) allows very stable car rotation and fully utilizes the AWD and mid-engine setup. If you overcook it a bit, the car is far easier to recover.

    A few pointers:

Watch tire pressures, you'll shoot for mid 30's hot.

Brakes! This is mentioned elsewhere, but I feel the R8 lacks sufficient brake cooling for heavy track use. Be mindful of brake fade and especially pad wear which is far greater than the GT3.

    Have fun!

Track related question...I never ran track insurance w/ the GT2, but I'm getting more paranoid w/ old age...any of you use track insurance, and if so, what's the best you've found for a 1 or 2 day event?
