    Getting a R8- Any years/models to avoid?

    Hey All-

Im wondering if there is any major differences between the years of the R8 so far. Anything like: "Get a 2010 or newer- they added in a flux capacitor then" would be very helpful info.

Also, aside from the engine, what other differences is there between the v8 and v10 models?

For what its worth- I am looking at spending around ~130k on this so I will either get a new R8 4.2 or a used v10 from a earlier year- Havent decided yet and your guys replies will help me out on that

    Thanks!!

Re: Getting a R8- Any years/models to avoid?

there's a thread here linked to from the FAQ about model year differences:

what differences in the model years?

there have been no bad model years or models of the r8 - changes have been minor.

main diffs between v10 and V8:
more flared sideblade air scoops on v10
shiny plastic fins on v10 vs matt plastic on the v8
2 fins each side front and 2 fins back on v10 vs 3 front and 4 back on v8
twin oval exhaust tips on v10 vs quad round tips on v8
more options as standard on the v10 (inc LED lights)
the rear number plate surround area is black on the v10's whereas it's normal body coloured painted on the v8.
larger rear diffuser on the v10
    v10 badges on front wings
v10 has bigger side skirts than v8
the headlight led strips are different on the v10
the rear engine compartments vents are silver as standard on v10 vs black on v8
front grille is different on v10 - has less "squares" on it than the v8
v10 instruments have red ring round them and a v10 logo on the tacho
v10 standard wheels are y-spoke vs the twin spokes of the v8 - but many people spec the v8 wheels on the v10
rear lights are smoked red on v10 vs normal red on v8
the engine designation plate is carbon fibre as standard on v10 vs plastic on v8
the glass between the cabin and engine compartment is heated on the v10 - it wasn't on my MY08 v8

    I'm sure I've missed some.

it sounds like a lot, but it's only really noticeable if people know what they're looking for.

it would be very helpful if you'd put your location into your profile as there are differences between the various countries.

If I had to decide between a new V8 or a slightly used, low mileage V10 in perfect condition (even a year old or more) that looks like I want it to look, I'd go for the V10 without thinking twice.

Re: Getting a R8- Any years/models to avoid?

I was in the same boat 7 months ago. I ended up spending a little more, and ended up getting a used V10. For me, when I was already willing to fork out $130k for a new V8, I know I would be kicking myself a year or two from now for not spending a little more for the V10. The V10 has many more options as standard than the V8, reducing the cost difference between the two if you are interested in those options on the V8. V10's are coming down in price as well now.

Here are a couple of yearly changes that I would consider. The led informational instrument lighting changed from red to white in +2009 which I think is softer on the eyes. In +2010, the navigation unit was improved with a higher resolution screen, a faster processor and an Icon added on the screen which assists for parking. This newer unit also adds the Ipod interface as an option.

Lastly, the V10 came out in 2009.5. if you are using Auto Trader or some of those sites, the 2009 V10 were listed as a 4.2L (at least 8 months ago), although this may have changed now.

    Good luck!

For V8s get a 2011, they bumped up to 430 HP. Probably new.
