    R-Tronic tips?

Hi there, I picked up my car for a week now, drive about 300kms, other aspect of the car are great, however the Rtronic gear box at stop and go traffic can be very frustrating.

On the manual it says the R tronic gear box will put it to neutral after about 30 seconds once the car stops at a traffic light, there is plenty of times only been like 5 seconds yet i found my self flooring the throttle in neutral and cause alot of embarassing moment

especially when i am at the intersection or traffic light trying to find a good timing to squeeze my car in between the heavy traffics. however i had to CONSTANTLY MONITORING the gear box, making sure its in gear not neutral, this make me very paranoid.

any suggestion or tips? and is it normal the gear change into neutral after like 5-10 seconds?
    cheers

Yes, it really is more like 5-10s for it to go to neutral. It should make an audible "ping" when it does this to alert you to it. You get used to expecting it over time, but if you only expect to be stopped for a short while you can leave your foot on the brake which will prevent it, or you could adopt the driving style of putting the car into neutral yourself every time when you stop.

No, that's not normal - the car should stay in gear if the brake is being applied. Here's the section in the owners manual:

Sundowner had a problem with their brake pedal switch:

    Non Start Problem

it's possible you could be seeing a similar issue.

It's normal IF you aren't actually applying any pressure to the brake. This is something I do all the time. In situations where you'd expect the car to barely move as is, you'll typically never actually put any pressure on the brake. Instead, your foot is just resting on the pedal, and as a result, it isn't engaging the brake switch. You actually need to depress the brake pedal if you want to keep it in gear, not rest on it. I often still don't do this, and find myself having to reengage 1st, but I don't find it to be a nuisance. The computer is ultimately just trying to keep your clutch bearing wear to a minimum.

thats exactly wat i am doing, i just sat my foot on the brake instead of applying any force to it, its enough to stop the car rolling forward.

after read your reply i actually took the car for a spin out side, and after realising the problem, i re-adjust my sitting and footing position. b4 my left food its not even sitting on the resting place,

however i do found the R8 brake is build in a wierd position, i sometime find its quite uncomfortable to sit my foot on the brakes.

Found this very frustrating at first just have to keep foot on the brake at lights.

The Auto can take some time to master, for most. I think I finally learned all there is to know about it. Mastering heal/toe method doesn't come overnight either. But...the row stick is generally, more easily driven by the masses, with less embarassing moments. The gate probably eliminates any missed shifts ,That we all have embarassingly encountered in the past.
