R8 High Mileage

Hi there,

Getting close to putting an R8 on my shopping list.

I will study up on the site about issues, things to look for etc and will likely come back with specific questions.

And here is one. When I buy exotic/hotrod/specality cars I have always bought low mileage cars. And my tendancy will likely continue with the R8.

However if I find a well-cared-for r8 with lets say 25k miles, what concerns would you have and special things I should be looking for? Like are there any super expensive repairs needed in the this mile range?

Other than the normal consumables (brakes, tires) I can't think of any areas of real concern. Perhaps intake cleaning, if required, but this should be a warranty item.

Not much should go wrong at the mileage. My R8 has 37,000 miles and the clutch is still running well. Hopefully the clutch can last to 50,000 miles! I will need to change my front discs and brake pads in about 5000 miles tho

I have about 40,000 miles on mine, and have tracked it heavily. It's been rock solid. I'm still on the original clutch. I have burned through 3 sets of front brake rotors, at least 5 sets of track brake pads (but still using the original street pads), 2 windshields, at least 5 sets of Hoosier's... and the car is still basically perfect. Very impressive reliability. Based on my experience, I would have no qualms about buying one with 25K miles on it.

And there you have it. I can't think of a higher praise for the reliability of the R8.

I have just been so anal about buying low milage cars I paused today and said for an Audi that is in great shape and well maintained why worry?

Part is I like finding vintage low milage cars.

We have an A6 and S5 so very familiar with the quality.

This input/confidence will allow me to broaden my search

I bought a 2yr 10 month old with 32k miles on the clock, it's my first supercar and my concerns were the same as yours. I used this site with the help of all the great guys and girls to finally decide whether to buy or not.

I made sure that it still had some warranty and had the car checked out at an Audi dealership straight away. The dealer found 2 faults, a knock sensor and an oil sensor, both were fixed under warranty.

So now I have a car I feel I can be confident with, but I'm still tempted to take an extended warranty, just in case, but finding the right warranty for the right price is hard work. Currently I'm looking at http://www.usedvehiclewarranty.co.uk/ which is offering 3 yrs including franchise repair and wear and tear cover for just short of £2000.

I just couldn't afford to have a major repair done, such as a cambelt failure etc

Hope you find what you're after, the car is brilliant, but after me driving low powered diesels for 15 yrs it takes some getting used to the number of revs available.

Jeff, please add your location to your profile.

If you're in the States, do a carfax check on the car and see if there's been anything "serious" with the vehicle. If it's clear, then run with it.

My first car had 44K miles on it at the time of it's death and the only issues it saw were recall items. It was rock solid and had no issues.

My second car, on the other hand, had the trans replaced at 9.5K (no clue why - didn't do a carfax and regret it), had to have the entire steering system replaced a few K miles later and overall was/is a nightmare. If I'd done a check and seen the replaced trans, I'd have walked away from it.

As a blanket statement, the R8's been a very reliable, solid machine.

Just do a little homework and it will pay off.

I would purchase from an Audi dealership and get the extended warranty for peace of mind, OR if buying privately get the car PPI'd, (this is a must anyway), at an Audi dealer and purchase the extended warranty at that time.
