Bad luck. Need a used rear left wing in phantomblack.

    Hi,

Another unlucky day for the beloved car. I managed to damage the rear left wing a bit, enough to require a repair job and a repaint.

I prefer to buy a used but originally painted part in good condition if anyone has one, for three reasons:

    1. Nobody likes non original paint, also hurts resale value. No matter where and at which garage I had previous car parts repainted, it was sadly never perfect.

    2. Non original paint may have issues with vinyl wrapping (especially unwrapping)

    3. The cost of the repair/paint job would be more expensive than a used part with original paint.

Already spoken with my insurance agent and my insurance will cover the cost of the used part, instead of covering the cost of the repair/paint job. Sadly there are no factory painted OEM parts as far as I'm aware.

I found one on ebay, but it's way too scratched -- they even sell it at a reduced price as it's badly scratched. The result would be the same as repairing/repainting my part.

Would appreciate any pointers if anyone know where I could find such a part. Willing to for a while just not having to install a newly painted part.

Am I sane to do this? or am I over reacting and should just get it repaired/repainted?

    Thanks

This is the problem with having a low production number car - you're better off having the car repaired. It will be unlikely you'll find a part that matches what you're looking for out there.

Used rear left wing... What part are you referring to exactly?

Pretty badly scratched from the pictures, but the pictures are bad... so it's tough to say.

To clarify, this is the part I'm after

Mate a good bodyshop will be able to respray it properly for next to nothing. Plus your cars black which will make it harder to spot (if not impossible) that audi didnt paint it.

Every single paint job I've seen in my life had defects. All of which were from decent garages.

Spotting a new paint job is not only a matter of looking at it, but using a paint thickness meter where you know immediately a part has been repainted since the paint thickness is different to other parts of the car.

I went to the Goodwood Revival last weekend and picked up a leaflet from a classic car restorer. They had an example of their work - an Aston DB4, it was stunning.

I am going to meet them next week to discuss sorting out my stone chips on the bonnet and a couple on the roof. I share your experience re the decent garages and have always been pissed off when I've gone to a top paint shop and an expert upon close examination will spot the work and point out faults.

I would appreciate your views on maybe going off piste and using a top classic car shop.

I can recommend an Audi approved garage in London - their work is outstanding (they worked on my last car on two occasions) and your anti-perforation warranty remains intact. The paint won't deceive the depth gauge though.

Re: Bad luck. Need a used rear left wing in phantomblack.

The damage on the wing is actually relatively minor, and is in a location that is not truly a huge part of the wing, it's in the triangular area meeting the tail light, as shown in the attached picture. Slightly dented at the very edge where it touches the tail light and scraped just barely down to the metal.

My rear bumper anyway needs replacing, or be newly painted - I'll definitely leave that for the shop - but since insurance is paying, my bet is they'd want to replace the whole bumper even though it only got scratched... so there will be paint work done.

My question is, does anyone think *only* this small area of the wing can be resprayed to acceptable quality? Garage says no, but their motives are not equal to mine.

Respraying only this small part of the wing would be my ideal if it's possible to do and achieve a good enough result.

I *think* that since this area is "off" the main part, facing to the rear, whereas the rest of the wing faces sideways, that no minimal paint color differences would be noticeable.

Would very much appreciate to hear pros and cons.

    Thanks

Thumbs up Re: Bad luck. Need a used rear left wing in phantomblack.

This damage looks like it could be repaired satisfactorily with a blend procedure, done by a pro of course. Color coat only over repaired, damaged area ,then a clear coat over the whole piece. It is a very common fix with two stage paint jobs, like ours.
