Thinking of getting the R8 V8

Hi guys, glad to be part of this blog. I've been a long time lurker but finally joined.

I am thinking of ordering a new R8 V8 pretty much base but adding only the sound system. The MSRP is coming out to about $117,000. Can anyone tell me if there are any audi deals out there currently? I am currently a two car audi owner so I'm sure there are loyalty programs out there. Also, how much did you pay above invoice for this car?

    A few comments:

In my opinion, the base price is a tease. You need to add 10%+ in options for the car to be as intended.

Some dealers may refuse to order a car that is stripped. Others will not give you a very good discount for ordering one, or may play games with your order (e.g., push you back farther in line when someone else orders a more profitable car).

The good news is that if you find a 2011 model that suits you, you can probably get it for at or close to invoice if you are good at bargaining. It would likely come well equipped, which would get you an out-the-door price that is close to a stripped car at MSRP.

Finally, I'd gently suggest that if you have to order a stripped one, you may be stretching too far.

You are correct. I am stretching a bit since I am absolutely in love with this car. I am close to putting an order in for the new 2012 Porsche 911 S but the Audi R8 I feel is in a different league. My budget with the Porsche 911 S was about $105K and didn't want to go above that but I figured if I spend an extra $10K then I could jump into an exotic category. Sighhhhhhhhhhh.... let's see what happens.

The 911S, even the new one, is a very different car than the R8. I would like to see the new one in order to be fair but believe it won't garner anywhere near the attention the R8 would as it will be viewed by most people as "the same." I've driven the current 911S quite a bit and it is a very competent car but I enjoy my R8 much more. The power, the handling and the ride are all nicer to me. The all-wheel drive is another plus. While the 911 does have two less seats, to be fair its really just a larger storage area unless you have small kids.
I'd have to agree that you may get some resistance ordering a "stripper" but they make a good point about checking existing inventories and trying to deal --and check everywhere. I bought my car out of state and have not have any issues due to it. The dealer was more than happy to ship the car.
Another option is to but a slightly used one. Generally R8's with low mileage are available and you could get more options closer to your original target.
    Good luck hunting!

    Regards,
    Baer

I've looked in to the loyalty program when I ordered mine. Unfortunately, the small print stated that the R8 was not eligible .

On the other hand, if you are a Audi Club member for at least 6 months prior to purchasing an Audi then you qualify for a $500 rebate through the club. I missed that by 1 month.

As I mentioned on another thread, Canadian dealers are offering a $20,000 cash incentive on all 2011 R8 4.2s, and $10,000 on all 2012s. They're practically giving them away up here.

I would look for a gently used 2009 or 2010. You can probably find a nicely equiped one for your budget. I bought my 09 last year for $105.
Don't even think of the porche... The R8 is a much better car!!!

Re: Thinking of getting the R8 V8

An interesting question for on budget people thinking between a 911 and an R8, how do running/maintenance costs of a 911 compare to the R8?

I live in NJ... how does buying a car in Canada work? I've never done it before. Any suggestions?
