It depends a lot on what you're driving now. Bear in mind also that the 2nd-gen R8 is still a couple of years away. Personally, I think the current R8 will someday become a collectible, and I don't intend to sell mine regardless of what else I might buy in the future.
Welcome to the board...nice to have another Vancouverite amongst us.

I understand both posters. Sebring, I have no doubt that the R8 will be one of the classic cars in this 30 year window of time. It has incredible presence and great, balanced performance. That being said, as someone considering a purchase, I just don't know whether to get one now or to wait for the twin-turbo V8 that is going to be in the Audi lineup. That should offer better performance and better fuel economy (it still matters to me if I commute in the R8). Additionally, what if dual-clutch gets added along with updated electronics?
Another thread had an email from someone at Audi saying the refresh late next year wouldn't alter resale values that much. That to me says minor power bump rather than the complete new engine. But what about new tranny? Will the S-Tronic be that much better than the R-Tronic in the R8 if I use it as a daily driver? I have the S-Tronic in my 2011 S4 and it's pretty **** good.
At the moment, I'm with the OP. I'm lost whether I even want the V8 or the V10 now (still haven't decided) or try to wait it out and see what happens with a facelift to see if anything changes significantly.
I'd wait. They are already sitting on dealer lots unsold. My dealer won't even take one in on trade, only consignment. He's had a new one sitting for four months.
As nice as the car is, it will never be a collectible. Wait for the next one, or wait until that time and get a great deal on the old one. The facelift will be out next year. You'll get hammered buying a new one now, unless you get $15K discount, which is the only way I'd buy now.

I got my V10 with a pretty good deal: -25K$CAN on the base price !! and they paid for the last two months of the lease of my current car, a 911 turbo (~7.5K$CAN) !! So that's a 32.5K$CAN rebate !!!!! and I get to keep the 911 for the rest of the winter to drive it: how can this get any better...!?!
It was sitting in the showroom, waiting for me. The guy responsible for ordering it was hammered by his boss because he ordered it in "Suzuka grey". Showroom cars usually are of "regular colors": black, white and so... He was affraid to get "stuck" with it. They are on a big renovation thing and they needed to get rid of this car. Lucky me !!
This color is amazing... I like white, I like grey, and I got both !!!! Suzuka grey with carbon sideblades (black leather interior): very nice.
And let me tell you something: 911 997 Carrera S --> 997 turbo --> R8 V10, the best move I ever did ! What a beauty ! Right now I have the turbo sitting in the garage (still three months on my lease) next to the R8. Yeah, I know a Porsche is a Porsche... but it kinda looks rather "common" next to the R8. And you can call me a spoiled child, I can live with it !!
Can't wait for Spring time... I live in Quebec, you know, bunch of white s*h*!*t coming down on us up here...

I don't understand the waiting part if you are going to get a car. For the same price, what car are you going to get that you would prefer over the current R8?
If you get the current R8 now and like the new one better and then get that, how is getting something else now and the new R8 later a better idea?

I'd get the current R8 and enjoy it until the end of next year when the facelift is due to be released and if you absolutely love the facelift just trade it in. I also wouldn't be surprised if the expected minor cosmetic updates could be easily retrofitted, just look at the Gallardos vs LPs retrofits available on the market.
And oh, I speak from the point of view of a manual 6-speeder...if I was a flappy paddle kind of guy, then I'd probably save my pennies and wait for the updated transmission because the current r-tronic is just epic fail IMHO.
