    Beware hill brake

For the first time in 3 months I was at a traffic light on a small incline and almost got hit in the rear when the electronic (hill hold) brake hesitated when I started up. (manual).

I am now going to inquire about disabling this moronic feature with the dealer.

The car hesitated for 2+ seconds and the kid in back of me came within inches of rear ending me.

Why they put this on a manual transmission I have no clue.

    Re: Beware hill brake

You live in FL, where the altitude change across the state is maybe 50'... I can see it being a pain for you.

In areas that are hilly and such, that hill hold assist can be a great function. Yea, it does tend to grab the car at odd times, but overall it's a nice feature for the most part.

Kid behind you was at total fault. Just because a light turns green doesn't mean you can just take off if you're not the first in line.

The hill hold assist used to annoy me when I first got the car but now it never seems to engage anymore. I don't know what happened but ever since my car arrived at the port in Germany I haven't experienced hill hold assist (it would engage all the time in AZ).

not true, there is as much as 500' (yes, HUNDRED) difference thoughout the state, still not very significant, but it's there.

    Re: Beware hill brake

The kid heard the engine rev up a bit as I put it into first gear. Then it paused and thank god he was a bit behind me. If he was closer I would have been rear ended.

I have never had this device come on before in Fl.

I am a bit nervous about it and will probably get some practice on getting out of the hole on a hill with the automatic brake engaged so I dont run into any problems in the future.

The biggest beef I have with it is that it holds on proportionally to how hard you have pressed the brake pedal. Do not mash down the brakes on a hill when you stop. Use just enough pressure to keep the car stopped and then the HA engagement won't be as intrusive. I find it also needs a much steeper incline to activate than my BMW needs, and the BMW system I have never noticed hold on to the car where it was intrusive.

does take some getting used to. in my V8 my learning curve was embarrasingly slow. i had the car stall on my a few times. now after having had two of these cars over 5 yrs i am used to it. if it really bothers you maybe the dealer can disengage it for you. i also had some near misses but indeed it would be the guy behind you's fault. what bothered me the most was that it made me look like a retard that didn't know how to drive a manual.

I was very embarassed as I am sure the guy behind me thought I couldnt drive a manual.

I will start practicing getting out of the hole on a hill. I dont think my dealer will disengage it for me. They are anal when it comes to making on changes on a car in warranty.
