    Harrisons' best favourite mod.

Has to be my track wheels and tires. Saved 28 pounds total by switching to the Lambo S.L. wheels and Hoosier slicks. Doesn't sound like much but the cars overal handling/braking are vastly improved. Sort of like a SPRINT-BOOSTER. LL...LOL. Before next track day I'll reinstall the booster (miss it dearly). With upgraded brakes and the booster, my times should drop. I know, I know, ONE change at a time, but this time I am going for the gusto. And I will make sure that I have enough fuel at all times because starvation is like lifting off the throttle. This can put you off the track for a big crash. Almost happened to me. See some of you at Buttonwillow 5-28-10 ? Speedventures.com ... A GREAT bunch of very talented people. \"/ And FAST !!

Thanks Harrison. I have been thinking about getting some track wheels and tires (tyres?). Any other suggestions for light and strong wheels? Should I get 19" or 18"? Where did you get yours?

I assume your slicks are not street legal. I'd prefer to use street legal track tires so I can drive to the track on them. Any suggestions there?

    Re: Harrisons' best favourite mod.

My Ford GT buddies proved to me that the Hoosier Slicks last far longer than most people beleive. I will drive to the track May 28th on the slicks. I personally like wheels with more spokes. I was fortunate enough to find a set of very light 15 spoke Lambo wheels that fit up perfectly. Slicks have a much stiffer sidewall, yet weigh far less than any other street/track tire. I know that 18 inch tires are a lot cheaper than 19s or 20s. And for a real serious tracker like say, Bodhii, might be the way to go. Plus they should be lighter 'cuz the're smaller. And it would lower the car a bit(maybe). I think I am very lucky to have gotten my paws on the wheels I did. I wouldn't trade them for any wheel out there. EXCEPT ,unless the Dymags (C.F.) were perfected and they would be a 15 spoke design as well. IF you could find the limited edition Super Leggera wheels it could cost you over 22,000.00 dollars.Still standing? I am very lucky to have my set-up and they would be on my car right now, but I want to save the slicks for the next track day. Buttonwillow 5-28-10. C-YAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TYRES are TIRES \"/ I take baby steps. Next is a larger splitter and wing then maybe TT.

18" factory wheels were offered for the R8, for winter tires, but were heavy. You can search this forum and find info & picts of them.

You may be able to find some aftermarket 18", but make sure that they clear the brakes and have the correct offsets. It would be easier and cheaper to find track tires for the 18".

The R8 does have huge brakes in the front and clearance is an issue even on some 19" rims. Make sure that whatever you get fits before you buy them.

    Good luck.

    Re: Harrisons' best favourite mod.

Hoosier R6 and Toyo R888 are both D.O.T. approved R-compound tires, so strictly they are street legal.

Hoosier has a flat prohibition against street use. Read through to the link, there is lots of good info there - pay attention to the part where they describe how light they are, and fragile too!
    Here is the safety warning:
    Tire Care and Safety
    Guidelines - R6 & A6

    http://www.hoosiertire.com/tctR6_A6.pdf
NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE: All Hoosier Racing Tires including DOT labeled Hoosier Racing Tires are designed for competition purposes only on specified racing
surfaces and are not to be operated on public roadways. DOT labeled Hoosier Racing Tires meet Department Of Transportation requirements for marking and performance only and are NOT INTENDED FOR HIGHWAY USE. It is unsafe to operate any Hoosier Racing Tire including DOT tires on public roads. The prohibited
use of Hoosier Racing Tires on public roadways may result in loss of traction, unexpected loss of vehicle control, or sudden loss of tire pressure, resulting in a
vehicle crash and SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
Toyo is a recommendation. EDIT: I couldn't find any recommendation against street use of the R888 on Toyo's website, my apology. http://toyotires.com/tire/pattern/proxes-r888 In my experience, as soon as the tire is used hard it gets quite noisy, so I won't use them as a street tire. This does not affect their track use though.

To remain street legal the tire needs to have at least 2/32 inch to the bottom of the grooves (i.e., not down to the wear bars). The Toyo is 6/32" new and 100 treadwear; the Hoosier is 4/32 new and 40 treadwear. You can guess which one will last longer!

Anyone interested in a set of 20" Dymags w/Toyos? (yea, I'm a thread jumping *****...)

Great to hear that you've found a combo you really enjoy, Harrison. I must admit that I envy you guys that track your cars. It has to be a blast. I've been tempted, but alas, I know myself all to well and like having my car in one piece. I'll stick to the desert for my high speed thrills.

If I ever get a chance, would any of you regular trackers allow a passenger?
