What's the most logical front splitter?

Well it finally happened...Destroyed my right frornt splitter, in a two stage way.The other night I scraped it badly but noticed no damage. It must have cracked, because last nite, coming home from movies (that chick flik "Date Nite" with the R8 in it),The splitter collapsed and went to the road surface.Only going 125 mph. Ground 1/2 of splitter away. I'll repair it,and make molds that I'll modify to my liking. Bigger/Sharper. Just to get me by untill I get a proper splitter designed or purchase. Tracking without the front splitter makes me leery/unhappy. My thought is to use construction foam on insides of my splitters using a release agent such as wax paper. then wrapping in fiberglass. C.F. such as mine is a bit too fragile/lightweight in such a vulnerable area. The difference of a few ounces makes no sense on an already heavier than a Corvette weight car. Or maybe I'll track with-out the splitters to see how much they actually help. What a bummer...But mistakes that get corrected lead to superior results. Two steps foward...One step back ! I will have to add some C.F. into the mix for extra strengh. It's a good thing this happened before my next track day 5-28. The splitter would have destructed on the way to the track anyways. Before the mishap the spoilers handled 150 mph with no worries.Above that and I would worrie. \"/

Sorry to hear about your splitter. Why don't you go visit the guys at APR, they were due to finalize a splitter for Bodhii before his incident, maybe they can do a tough one for you and it would help me out as I want one for my car. In addition, I'd love them to be able to copy the PPI wing brackets for my APR rear wing. They are at 21037 Commerce Pointe Dr.Walnut, CA 91789, out Pomona way. They had a template done for John but haven't finalized it. Given ground clearance and likely scraping it might make sense to use some kind of plastic over honeycomb?? I'm thinking it needs to be tough above all, especially if I use it in London with speed bumps they have there.

If your going to go through that time, trouble and expense of making your own molds & spliter, why not figure out a way to make an easily removeable one. One with a "blade" for the track that can be removed for the street?

I like the idea of a removeable splitter ...Go with a small, med. or large depending on the particular usage/track! I'll definitely speak to the APR guys. I can see it now, insert the splitter like a magazine into the pistol. All strong light weight materials will be considered. Or maybe the R 8 with a small wing like mine needs no splitter. Will track without and see results.

The Saleen 7 uses Teflon on their splitters: tough, light and eases the front end over bumps.

The PPI units are rediculously thin skinned. Luckily I removed them both as the one good peice was ready to give out at any moment. Every scrape at a dip really does cost a few bucks ! Track only usage and the splitters would have lasted much longer. These are actually easy to remove, approx 45 min. for both. Three stock mounting (Torx) and several sheet metal screws on underside for each side.

Re: What's the most logical front splitter?

There is a video of a car involved in a major crash when he loses his rear spoiler at 145 mph. I would caution anyone changing the way the car handles with apparatus that changes air flow. If it falls off or breaks your life my be at risk.

I wonder if we could get these items from Audi so we could be sure they work properly on our cars. It may cost more, but it may save your life.

Maybe I worry too much. I like safe.

Re: What's the most logical front splitter?

Don, I lost controll of my P car a long time ago. The wing saved me, but had I gotten twisted around backwards that whaletail would have launched me. In this Targa slant nose my buddy was passenger and it turns out he wasn't wearing his safety reastraint. I shaved a little of the clearcoat off my door at 150mph. 4:00 am with no traffic. A very expensive lesson. My other side got bent by the rear wheels of a semi's trailer. Trailer got air from running over my right rear. Never saw my rear bumper again. My plate said TIN MCHN. For a while I was expecting the police to arrive at my door with the bumper/plate in tow. No body suffered except me and the car. Now I can play at the track and not worry about the tractor/trailers.
