    Twin Turbo V10

Hello all - I'm new to the forum, and just picked up a new V10 R8 several weeks ago. I would like to install the twin turbo set-up either from heffener performance or underground racing. Any news or exeperience with this set-up in either the Audi or Gallardo? I'm not worried about warranty, or longevity - but I want a fairly stable well sorted system for pump gas street use. Any feedback from someone who has either driven or owned either of these setups would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for any and all!

Hell yeah, go for it! I have friends who swear by both tuners and having seen their work, they both seem top drawer. The car will make so much power that a modest tune should allow for good longevity as well.
    Keep us posted!

Undergrounds' TT set-up on a stock V10 can make from 700 to 1000 hp for 39K US. The highly modified V10 Stage 3 can make from 1000-1500 hp. 109 K They seem to have a lot of experience. They have a stage 1 and 2 as well.

1000-1500 hp!! LOL ! Yes, that's exactly what all R8's need to make the car perfect. I'm sure that will work out very well.

That reminds me of junior hi school when some students would put those stickers onto the back of certain other students that said, "KICK ME!"

    frankenauto,

I sent you a pm. I'd love to chat with you about installing turbos on your V10. We have more experience with turbocharging R8's than anyone in the world. Our goal as always would be to provide you with a reliable upgrade that will satisfy your need for power while not upsetting the balance of the car. I hope to hear from you.

*** Please understand,... I am in NO way, referring to Heffner Performance. Heffner Performance seems to be a very skilled and prudent developer. I'm sure they would not contemplate adding that much extra power to a basic R8 V10. I do believe Heffner could make a reliable TT R8 V10 package that would make any turbo hungry driver very happy.

That reminds me of junior hi school when some students would put those stickers onto the back of certain other students that said, "KICK ME!"
ie: Someone is about to make another innocent, unsuspecting individual into a chump.

1000-1500 HP would destroy a basic R8 rather quickly. The basic R8 V8-V10 is just not made for such power. Reinforcing and upgrading with the necessary stronger parts and components, would probably double the price of the entire car. Maybe try buying a R8 LMS full GT race car, adding a huge turbo system to it, and then turn that into your huge HP street car?

Personally I would think that no more than 650- 675 HP could be added to the R8 chassis with any kind of regular use in mind. And if driven hard, it would require a regular and thorough mechanic evaluation of the extra cooling systems, transmission and drive train, as well as a detailed exam of every connecting piece throughout the car.

This car below, the PPI Audi R8 V10 RAZOR GTR, due to its extra added supercharger power and significant weight loss (250kg/551lbs), would probably be quite a bit faster than any TT R8 V10 on a basic chassis. And it is far better designed than a basic R8 V10 to handle such an extreme power increase. The carbon body parts are not only lighter, but also add considerably to the overall chassis strength. They seem to be making the same estimates in amounts of power to add that would conform to the R8 V10 chassis.

PPI Design has unveiled two new packages for the Audi R8 (V8 & V10) at the Dubai Motor Show last week. During the development PPI used the existing Razor GTR kit, unveiled at Top Marques Monaco 2009. The body shell of the supercar got a proper treatment of exposed carbon fiber. The doors, bonnet and roof are clean chrome; only in case of the third Razor GTR stage. The fourth stage of the program consists of a fully exposed carbon fiber body shell.

The exterior widebody kit contains a new front bumper, front spoiler, front bonnet, front fenders, sideskirts, sideblades, rear fenders, rear bumper, rear diffuser, rear spoiler and a new rear engine cover with air channels that can be fitted with a polycarbonate, scratch-resistant and UV coated glass in solid or slotted form. The total weight LOSS by installing the kit is 250kg (551lbs)..

... V10 power upgrades are Stage 1 – 60hp increase, Stage 2 – 80hp increase and for Stage 3 are further power increases available upon request.

Braking is performed by a 380mm braking system with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers at the back. The R8 can be fitted with 10Χ19 and 11Χ20 forged aluminum wheels, with 265/35 19, and 335/30 20 Michelin Pilot Sport 2. Alternatively, carbon fiber wheels are optional in the following dimensions: 10Χ19 inch and 12Χ20 inch.

Pricing for the complete carbon fiber Razor GTR kit is another 35,000 euros on top of the regular kit, which means prices within the program range now from €35,000 up to €80,000.

The RAZOR GT/GTR packages are offered in 4 levels. The first stage is the Razor GT kit costing €35,000. This is the existing Razor GTR widebody kit (stage 2) priced at €45,000, but without the rear engine lid/air channels and rear spoiler. The third stage is the Razor GTR Optical kit – the one pictured here – including glossy carbon fiber and clear-coat. For €50,000 it’s yours. The final stage is the Razor GTR Exposed Carbon Fiber covering the complete Audi R8 with a glossy carbon fiber look, including the doors, the bonnet and the roof. All prices are without painting and mounting!

    Re: Twin Turbo V10

    Excellent points, Bodhii.

I was thinking about this thread on the way back to Phoenix from Vegas this afternoon and wondering a few things about having a car with that sort of hp.

First and foremost, can the driver work the pedal with that sort of hp? That's not everyday driver's stuff. HP is/can be the death of a machine very quickly. It WILL get you into trouble if you're not used to it. And when you start talking large amounts of HP, the amount of trouble and the quickness that it will get you in trouble is not a linear road. It's very much a steeply rising curve.

There are very few people out there that can really control that sort of output. I believe that they go by the names of Vettle, Button, Alonso, Webber, etc.

And as you point out, what about the chassis and drive train? I'm already worried that the ~630 hp that the TT system is able to put through mine is very taxing on it and something that I'll need to pay extra attention too.

I am really hoping that the weak link in the drive train is the traction between the tires and the ground. These large HP forces can put huge shock loads through the drive train. If it's not designed with an overhead in strength it's going to be a problem.

I will be the first to admit that while I'm thrilled with what I'm getting, it does very much intimidate me (which is GOOD) and I will treat it with kit gloves for a long time.

When I went from an 800cc, 125 hp engine to a 1000cc 195 hp engine in my first desert race car I managed to take the thing out and waste two rims in about 5 minutes. It never slid like that before and it never went that fast that quickly before. It was a great lesson in throttle control.

    -------------
BTW - always add braking ability before adding power. Stopping is MUCH more critical than accelerating and improved handling should be considered prior to adding HP too. I've seen too many people (off roaders) build cars with ridiculous amounts of hp (for the size of the vehicle) with horrid suspension tuning do nothing but fight the machine. Get the chassis working correctly first then make it go faster. Just making the chassis work will increase your overall speed amazingly. It's why we spend hours setting up the chassis and tuning shocks out in the desert. If the wheels don't stay planted to the ground, all HP does is make it worse.

    Re: Twin Turbo V10

The only place you can benefit from those kind of huge power increases is at the drag strip. You still need a drivetrain and chassis to match the power of the engine.

Not something that is very useful on the street or other types of racing.
