    Laser jammer installation

    My fellow speedsters,

I've just recently purchased a V10 and can't get enough of it - as luck would have it, the governmental pencil pushers decided to significantly worsen punishments for speeding and as its no longer just about paying fines (which I'm more than fine with), but also losing the license for unacceptable periods which increase with every "offence", I decided I need to take some active counter measures.

After some online research I decided to settle for a laser jammer called Laser Interceptor. For complete protection I'd like to mount it both in the front and in the rear.

I would love to hear anyone's experiences with laser jammers, and specifically with installation on R8s. I'm considering the following positions for installation:

Front: In the upper section of the grill, just below the license plate, there is plenty of space behind the plate for an automatic mechanism which exposes/hides the sensor/jammer modules automatically when the jammer is turned on/off. I plan to build a mechanism to do this, but haven't yet decide on how it would work (considering small solenoid push/pull electromagnets), if anyone has any suggestion on components for the mechanism I'd love to hear them.

Rear: The rear presents quite a challenge, apparently there don't seem to be any *ideal* locations for placing those modules. I am thinking of mounting the two modules under the motorized wing so that the modules are exposed when the wing is open and hidden when its closed. The best location on the wing would be on both opposite ends, just where there is a small removable grill under it. The challenging part here is heat and that's where my question comes in, before I go out and do some field measurements.

I noticed there's quite a bit of heat in the entire wing area, does anyone know what kind of temperatures we're looking at during a warm day when the car is being pushed around a curvy road at high RPMs and without the amounts of air one would expect to have from fast driving? I'm trying to establish if the electronics/casing of those modules wouldn't just melt (I'd hate to need to water-cool them, haha).

I would like those sensor/jammer modules to be well hidden in case I am stopped by police. I'd prefer them not to be found following a good close up visual inspection.

I'm also planning on installing a valentine one radar detector in the front, probably above the license plate and just below the hood closing mechanism, but I'm going to leave this to a later thread.

I've considered posting this under "Performance modifications" as it has the potential of increasing one's speed quite dramatically, but I guess this section is more appropriate

Any hints, ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

As luck would have it, I was recently tagged for speeding. By sky patroll. I hope your system will detect air surveilance. Anyone install a sun/moon roof into their R8 yet ??

    Re: Laser jammer installation

Do a search under my name and Blinder. Hands down the best jammer on the market if you do some searching on the forums and reviews.

I'm running all four of the transceivers up front. Two in the middle grill, one in each side intake. They're the fun ones to mount, as they are attached to both the grill work and the duct work.

The two in the grill have been sunken into the webbing from behind.

The Blinder has a dual position switch a piezo element speaker and an dual color LED that changes from green to red when activated. The switch allows you to change between jamming and parking sensor mode. I've left mine in jammer mode.

In my last car, I just left the LED hidden and had the unit wired to turn on w/the car. There was no clue that the system was in the car other than when it would go off. This time I wired it so that I have a volume control/on/off knob and I separated the LED out into two individual units.

One nice thing about the Blinder is that it's programmable. It will only alert/jam in programmed time. I think I have mine set to 7 seconds. They upgrade the software fairly often too. Better filtration, better sensing, etc.

It's also really good about not falsing with certain vehicles. The older version (M45) would go off, loudly (hence why I put a volume knob on mine) and as long as it was getting a signal. It was terrible when facing an Infinity SUV - they use laser for cruise and proximity and it would set the M45 off all the time. Now, it's a thing of the past.

Thus far, the system's worked well. I've been hit w/laser a few times and not once has Officer Friendly decided to follow. They often look at the gun with a puzzlement. It's sort of fun.

Don't worry about rear facing - yes, it does happen, but in general, you'll see the guy long before he hits you from behind.

This post shows my "dash" where I control the V1 and the Blinder

Man, I sound like a commercial (after proof reading my post.)

I'll try to get some pix of the front of the car so you can see where I've mounted the transceivers.

    Re: Laser jammer installation

    Thanks for your feedback.

I have a blinder from an old car, and I do remember it worked very well. However all the reviews I've read say that laser interceptor works better than blinder. Plus my unit is 6+ years old, and only a dual. So I'll be getting myself a LI.

I would really like to avoid having aggressive cops go at my car removing the jammer if they stop me, or asking me to follow them to the station where they can have a party at the car and then slam me with a fine as high as several thousand dollars.

Therefore I'd like to invest in full stealth. I don't want the heads to show at all, no matter how hard you look, when the unit is off.

****pit sounds / lights bother me much less.

Cops around here like to also laser at night, so there's no chance I'm going to see them then. I like a "complete" solution and therefore prefer to do the rear as well. If I do the work once, its best to be thorough.

    Re: Laser jammer installation

    Well, in the UK the boys in blue are cracking down on these, here is a story that hit the press last week;

Speeding driver with camera jammer gets ban
A Porsche driver caught with a laser jammer to scramble speed cameras has become the first person to be banned from driving for using one.

The driver, Jamie Shreeve, 21, from Caister near Great Yarmouth, is only the second motorist in Norfolk to be prosecuted for using such a device and he's the first in the UK to receive a driving ban as a result.

He received a 30-day ban when he was caught red-handed by police.

The action was welcomed by two Norfolk police offices, who have been cracking down on speed camera jammers since discovering them earlier this year.

Sergeant Geoff Bowers and PC Chris Harris first came across the devices when they pulled over a Porsche 911 Turbo in March and they've since discovered many more.

The gadgets are sold over the internet as 'parking sensors'. They are wired up under the dashboard with an on/off switch and feature a small jamming device on the exterior of the car.

    Re: Laser jammer installation

The a-holes here will give me a 30 day ban for speeding regardless. So I'd rather have one for actually trying to use a countermeasure

Anyway, since I plan on my units to be fully hidden when turned off, I'd love to watch them try and find jammer.

    Re: Laser jammer installation

    Good info.

Up front - here are some pix of what I did (click on pic for hi res shot):

    In the outer grills/intakes:

The picture's sort of dark, but you can see the two transceivers under the front bumper strip, way out in the corners. They're sunken into the back of the grill to make them fit better and stay level - also, being a little farther out gives it better peripheral vision.

10 points to the first one to find the V1 hidden in the picture.

If you're determined to run something in the back, the best place to put it would be in the piece under the rear bumper, in the lower valence (honeycomb panel in pic below). It's held in with three clips and while it will come out w/o removing the bumper, putting the clips back in place with the bumper on is another challenge...

You could build some sort of mount behind that piece and then clip it back in. - might bury the heads of the transceivers into the back side of the piece, getting them as close to the outer surface as possible - but don't cut through.

One other option - and this is a little outside the box, but if you're looking for stealth, purchase a rear fog light kit and hide the transceivers inside the light housing.

@KfabR8, good stuff. This is pretty well hidden although it would not pass a close up look with a flashlight.

Is the V1 just right of the quattro logo? I guess there could also be room just behind the licence plate area?

Thanks for the rear fog light tip! I'll take this under consideration.

"As far as I know, those four sensors in the front end of the car have something to do with the fuel injection system; something about ambient air temperature and pressure, I believe, Officer."

"No, sir. It's my understanding that those are parking aids. From what I've heard, Audi uses both sonic and infrared."

Black head screws would help hide the pieces.

Yes, that's the V1 - there's a reflection in the pic that gives it away.
