    Hi.
Can anyone recommend track day tyres for a standard R8 V10?

    Re: Track Day Tyres

If you are new to tracking a car, I suggest you stick with the high performance summer radials (Pirelli P Zeros) that came on the car. They are plenty good when you are learning how to track a car. If you are somewhat experienced at the track, special performance street tires like the Trofeo or Corsa will be fine. If you have a good amount of experience, the Michelin Cups are halfway between street tires and true R Compound track tires. If you are very very experienced on the track, only then go with R Compound tires like the Hoosier R6.

    Re: Track Day Tyres

Mothertucker is a VERY experienced tracker. You would be wise to heed his advise on tires and other things. Hoosier R6 compound tires have the most grip...but they give no advanced notice when they let go. One minute you are on the track and the next you are off. Think scary and expensive.

If it starts to rain you are in grave danger with Hoosier R6 tires on your car. The little things like stopping or steering come to mind. You may want to consider using your OEM tires until they are used up initially. Once you have enough experience on OEM tires then consider special track tires. Just my thoughts.

My OEM pirellis was done after approx. 9k miles - yes i am the track thing. For replacement i bought 19' Nitto Invo 305's and 235's. Certainly not R-compound or Michelin cup traction, but after 2k miles and a couple of track days they seem to be very good value for the money.

As you push up your performance tire envelope, you may want/need to consider matching the car's brake pads up to the tire grip levels as well if you start taking the car places (i.e. a track) where you can really push things.

cmon guys... are the Hoosier R6 that deadly? Surely you can feel the car loosing grip or get some feedback before they let go? Anyone tried them on the track?

Guys are running Hoosier R6s here in Aus on 997 GT3 and GT3RS and no one has hit the walls yet!!?!

My Michelin Cups were not very impressive. Good when new and a few heat cycles.
I'm buying the Hoosier R6 and see what happens...

    Re: Track Day Tyres

I'm just guessing, but I wonder if the driver in this video was using tires that didn't give him enough warning:

    (not me, ever...I hope)

I'm still useing the OEM P Zeros, then maybe I'll go to PS2s. What do you think?

    Re: Track Day Tyres

I might be corrected as I have never been on this circuit but this corner is quite famous for its challenges with rear/mid engine cars due to rise in the corner.

Through this corner you need to be careful of the inertia weight of the engine behind you as the car lightens.

Watch the attached clip of Richard Hammond losing it in the same spot same way.

Basically more the weight transfer not the tyres even though it is all things combined.
