Help!!!! Be careful when powder coating calipers

Guys, I would like to share my mistake with all of you, so you can avoid the same issues I am having with my brakes, I took the car to a decent shop that I know, with apparently tons of good reputation, I asked them to powder coat the stock black calipers since I think in Red they look better, that was 2 or 3 months ago. I noticed the color has been changing a lot, now they are not red anymore, but even worse is that the brakes aren't anymore strong as they used to be in combination with yellow pagids for the track, and the reason is because the people from that shop aren't professionals at all, they never took apart the pistons from the calipers, nor the seals or anything, they painted and put them in the oven, so today this morning I asked the dealer to check the brakes, they took apart the calipers and guess what? the red paint was all over the seals and because of the heat they were all cooked front and rear, the bad part is that the dealer is telling me that each set of seals is about $700.00....My question to you is, are these seals that expensive? I know our stock calipers are Brembo's, can i try to find the seals directly with them? or does anyone know where to order a seal kit replacement for R8 calipers? where do I find the freaking seals?
Please be careful where you send your calipers for powder coating!

    thank you

    Brembo parts are expensive.

They don't sell direct; but you can check with the USA Brembo importer, Race Technologies, for local dealers in your area:

Bummer. If you manage to find a used set you can just swap it, or use the parts you need, for a fraction of the price.

Keep in mind, that because the calipers were baked they will need to overhaul the entire caliper(s). This means complete dis-assembly, new piston seals (x4 per caliper rear, x6 front) x2 per axle, and all of the dust boots. They will also likely do a light honing to the bores to remove any powder from them as well as cleaning out all the fluid passages. Not to mention any seals needed to seal the two halves of the calipers together (likely O-rings). There is a lot of parts and labor involved here.

DON'T powder coat calipers..... use high quality heat proof paint!

Hi! Sorry to hear that! By the way my car is on the shop right now servicing the calipers (checking out any problem since I have brake issues), and since I'm allready there I painting then red. But as i now, they dismantle the hole caliper, they apply the paint wet on wet (not power coated, don't ask me why, I'll tell you about the result) they put the vinyl decals, then they spray the clear coat at the end owen not at very high temp, but just to ensure a quick dry and dust free.

I think you should go to the shop and explain them what they did, they should pay. They pay in Italy that is a crazy country so I can immagine the customer rights you have in USA!

Bummer! If calipers are not to be powder coated (which it appears they are not to be), then the shop should have know this and they are at fault here. Even if you insisted that they be powder coated, they should have known and you are relying on them for their professional guidance. Insist on entire replacements!

    Good luck!

Wibragal, contact Jerry Buza at Race Technologies, the USA Brembo distributor and he will let you know if parts are available - jerry@racetechnologies.com. Brembo USA won't sell you the parts directly but will refer you to an authorized Brembo dealer - in my case I went with Michael Kim at Pure Motorsports - mike@purems.com- who supplied my Brembo slotted rotors and recently a set of replacement rings and they are great and very efficient. PM me if you need further info.
