Angry Manual V8 clutch going after 18k miles!?

    Hi All,

i just had the car i thought i was buying 2m (09 v8) inspected by Audi and they have said it needs a new off-side rear wheel bearing for £542 and the clutch is heavy and looks like its on its way out. cost = £4506.

Does this not seem ridiculously early for a manual to need a new clutch?? although i guess if the owner cant drive it properly anything is possible. im absolutely gutted as i thought i'd found a peach of car. not a single warranty issue in 3 years and now it needs £5k worth of repairs!

There must be a lot of labour ££ in that quote because the parts certainly don't add up to even half of that amount.

If you can PM me the VIN then I can quote you exactly.
The wheel bearing is only about £120

Did they mention that I needed a flywheel as well?

Thanks, I was just looking for a ball park figure to be honest, I have no idea how much a clutch would cost, and to be honest I would fit it myself anyway when and if I ever need one

Or the mileage is incorrect?, does everything stack up as in around the same annual mileage etc?

Wheel bearing, I assume there's some play in the wheel. Well, hope this isn't the same for you, but when I had the same issue, well I think it was a wheel bearing, Audi said I'd have to have both sides of the car done. This involved all suspension arms being replaced even though only one was an issue.

Fortunately, UVW paid for the worn one, I had to contribute £500, and Audi paid for all the others. Total cost I think for both sides around £3k.

Both the v8 and v10 clutch cost the same. Just had a v10 clutch installed in my v8 and Audi quoted me £3100.00 here in the north west. Got it done by an Indy for 2200.00. Audi dealers aren't all owned by Audi themselves and labour costs will differ from one Audi garage to another. Had one dealer refuse to quote me in case it wasn't the clutch, which IMO is just a sales technique to charge an absolute fortune when they get your car in.

I believe the actual clutch plate is about 1k including vat and then there's some bolts, etc that bring it to around 1300.00 inc vat. Or so I was told by two different indys

Re: Manual V8 clutch going after 18k miles!?

I've had another quote from Audi in London this time and it was also £3100 for the clutch fitted. I guess a flywheel is another £900 so maybe that formed part of my original quote. Either way unless the current owner is willing to discount it off the car it's going to be a no go.

Regards the wheel bearing the only thing Audi said it would be mean if not fixed is 'noise' from the wheel.

Mike - mileage all checks out, service history spot on with consistent mileage in between.
