Using my porsche optimizers on the r8

I have a 5 month old Porsche Optimizer and a 4 year old Optimizer.

I have over $200 invested and wondered if anyone has used them in the R8.

I dont know if Audi makes a specific charger as Porsche does.

I hope one of these will work and not cause any damage to my battery or electrical system.

    Any information will be helpful

    Thanks

    Don in FL

I would figure as long as you find a live socket (I believe the cig socket in the ash tray area is switched), that should work just fine.

It shouldn't be "brand specific", it's probably just a good, high quality low amperage battery charger/floater. Looks like it has multiple settings, so it must have some sort of amperage settings according to what's being charged. Nice piece, btw.

I tried a charger through both cabin and trunk socket and neither worked. Had to go right to battery terminals

Key on (which would defeat the purpose) and it should hook up, but alas, the sockets would both appear to be switched.

Its been a few months but I think the Porsche 997 TT had a socket that was always hot and the optimizers were great and did the job for 4 years.

I hope they work in the Audi without the key being left on.

Maybe the dealer can make one socket hot as the Porsche has.

What a bummer if I cant use my insiide 12V sockets and have to go thru hood to the battery terminals.

I have a cheap cannon point and shoot that takes GREAT pictures as long as there is adequate light in the room. Powershot SX200 IS

When the Spyder arrives next month I will use my D90 which takes great pictures.

The new charger looks like CTEK. Same manufacturer and product as OEM I believe. I used a CTEK 3300 with my cayman all winter and I think it also works with the R8

You can find CTEK 3300 and cig adapter on ebay... so maybe your cig adapater is broken you can probably use the CTEK 3300 one

Found a post on here too

Not broken, just that key needs to be on for adapter to be hot. I bought a trickle charger for about $25 and has worked fine the last two winters

The Porsche Battery Optimizer is an OEM from CTEK Sweden. Yes, those Porsche Battery Optimizer does work with the R8. In fact it works with all my cars as the cigarette lighter outlets are not switched. Since the R8 outlets are switched, I had to use it in conjunction an alligator clip adapter (for direct battery connection). I've just upgraded mine to the CTEK model XS 7000 since it handles a lot more chores. I've also added a CTEK battery status indicator panel, which also contains a charging point, and it's permanently located inside the luggage compartment.

I prefer this status indicator to the panel.

I have tried the new Porsche charger using the socket inside the R8 trunk. It did not work.
